2020/21 Carlo Ancelotti

So you're saying good managers don't improve players?

i don't see what the suggestion is here mate?

I think Carlo Ancelotti can, and should be expected to in some regards, improve our players.

That doesn't mean I expect him to turn Gomes or Delph or Iwobi into world beaters. But I do expect our players to be able to do some simple stuff.

If that means playing the way we do away at home for the last few games of this season, then so be it, and then hopefully new signings mean we can pick it up properly next season.

I think to many of them are a lost cause and need shipping out. Gomes has no fight. Iwobi has no fight and no talent. I dont rate so many of this squad. Id get rid of 6/7 tomorrow.
In answer to the question directly. No. I dont think any manager is getting a tune out of a lot of them. We bought to many wasters.
Ship them out.

Of the last 10 seasons, there are only 2 where we finished the league with more wins than we have now... with 4 games still to play.

Give the man time, resources and support. I can’t think of many better who could take us to where we want to be.

But we've seen this season that it absolutely isn't the way forward.

Hopefully new signings help change that. Those changes have to come from the manager as well though.

A healthy first XI, less Rodriguez, is good enough to grind out wins against anybody except City, United and now the rejuvenated Chelsea. They won't always do it, but they've done it often enough to have us in the mix.

We have no depth. Davies' emergence has been a revelation on that front, but when we have to trot out the bottom third of the squad we often pay for it. And trot them out we do, because if we don't the players in the first XI start to break and then we have to trot the bottom third out anyway.

We're a summer away from some depth and at least two from real quality in the spots where it's expensive. If we're going to break the wage scale to do that, next summer when the wages come off is the time to do it.

haha

Nah I'm well chuffed. I mean, I still think we've cocked up one too many times, but we're away again on Thursday so I have hope.

I said earlier that I can take us being able to do this, it's a good thing. My issue is it's still all we can do. And some of the issues we see aren't just on the players - or your man crush. But people like to absolve Carlo of any blame, so it's a weird one.

I expect our players to be able to pass to each other in home games and I can't not lay some of that blame on the manager. Our away results are fantastic, but the performances are very marginal - it's enough for now like, but it's not really the way to build going forward.

Its not all we can do is it though? We outplayed Spurs twice at home recently and if Holgate and Keane could concentrate properly we’d have won both. We outplayed Palace at home and should have won that easily if the strikers had finished chances. We came back from two down against United away and then equalised a third time. We came back twice from being down at home against Liverpool, came from behind against West Brom at home.

This is all the same group of players under Ancelotti. There’s just an agenda being peddled that we’re crap every single game and we can only play one way, and when we win it’s not enough because it’s about performances but when we don’t win the performance is irrelevant all of a sudden.

There’s plenty to legitimately criticise Carlo for this season. I don’t like his 5 at the back, I don’t like the constant rotation, he didn’t value anything from King Bernard Tosun Kean Gordon Nkonkou, he’s put far too much faith in Siggurdson Davies Keane Coleman, he indulged Richarlison playing upfront when we actually had a balanced team with him on the left, he’s played players when they’re not fit, he’s misled fans on injury returns, he’s made subs too late sometimes.

What becomes annoying though is this constant peddling of this notion that our football is rubbish, it’s worse than Allardyce’s, it’s the worst in the league, we can’t attack, we can’t defend, every other team plays to a dynamic philosophy, we’ve played the exact same way all season, we’re not getting the most out of the players we have (as though Davies Gomes Siggurdson are somehow better than challenging for Europe). Whatever the score, whatever the performance it’s the same tired agenda being pushed. We could have hit Palace for four or five, we took the game to Spurs after falling behind and outplayed them. Yet people just ignored that and made out it was the same as the Newcastle or Fulham performances. We’ve beaten Arsenal and West Ham away in succession and again it’s dubbed as fortuitous, can’t be sustained, edged it. Its tedious.

Some of his decisions baffle me at times but more often than not in the big games he gets it right. For some reason this season the players have switched off against lessee opposition and we have lost far too many games like this. Some of the blame could lie at Ancelotti door but a lot of these players just seem to have a poor mentality. Hopefully they will be moved on and replaced with players more in tune with what's expected.

Thing is, there has been plenty of games where we he has played and we have still just been grinding through the game to grab a result. We just need more options throughout the team tbh, more pace out wide, and another option from midfield so if James is being marked out of a game there is still someone with a bit of creativity in the team.

The main difference between the sides at the top and the rest of the league is that they still grind out results on off days. It's not like City plays a blinder every time out, or that Chelsea looks good every time they hold somebody scoreless. Like any elite attacker, James has off days. On some of those days, he still ninjas out some moment of quality that pays for all. Some of those days, he doesn't.

I completely agree that we need more attacking options. For right now, we're likely going to have to pick that quality up in the spots where it's relatively plentiful, meaning that it's affordable and that we can actually attract the players without Champions League football.

We've won 11 away games with the players we have. They're not totally crap.

Yes, we need better players. But the players we have should have been capable of winning games we've lost at home. While the players have been poor in said matches, Carlo has made mistakes and you can't just keep saying 'we need better players'.

but we do lol and yes carlo has but we will be better nxt season by a mile

It comes down scouting and recruitment in the end, there are plenty of good players in the championship/smaller teams in Europe who we could sign without CL football

These players have all had good seasons and, in fact, Keane has been brilliant. No idea who else he was supposed to play in their positions in any case
Yeah I find comments like that strange, we all have our favourites, but the fact is those players have all contributed at different times this season, some like Keane have been great in fact.

The new training regime proves it worth.

This is my point.

People go 'it's all the players', then name players who have just helped us win 11 away games (and lose a load of home games like).

Then they say the recruitment has been crap, but say Brands is doing a bang up job.

Then they say Carlo can't improve or shouldn't be expected to improve players, but as we've seen, he kind of has done.

He's an 7/10 for me on the 'progress' we've made. But we may well still get Europe and that'll be an 8/10. It's a weird season with loads of caveats that I fully accept. I'm just in no way shocked that we won today, but in equal measure I'll be in no way surprised if we lose to Sheff Utd.
