2020/21 Carlo Ancelotti

I know mate, as I said I think he’s the best thing about the club atm

I just worry that he can get it so wrong twice in a season. It seems a trust issue with certain players? But then he seems to have too much faith in others...

I just don’t see why he did what he did yesterday or, at the very least, didn’t change it sooner
More than twice he’s got it wrong.

The Leeds, West Ham, Newcastle and Fulham games were like watching the same match on a repeat.

Alarm bells are ringing and something must change.

I think we find ourselves in a position at the minute where certain teams raise their game and work rate when they play us, coupled with our players feeling like they can half arse the game and get a result.

That’s not to say Ancelotti is absolved of any of the blame for these results. He needs to be able to motivate the players to an extent and stop thinking he can make too many weird tweaks and still keep a balanced team.

I can’t say I’ve seen much of Fulham apart from when they’ve played us, maybe they play that way every game. But certainly Newcastle, didn’t play anything like they’d done in the games previous to our recent match with them.
Fulham do play that way every game. It’s just recently they’ve been tired due to a heavy run of games, and had 8 days off this last week.

Carlo probably thought we couldn’t match them physically so tried to outplay them but the issue is none of the midfielders performed and they were in a system which relied massively on Richarlison to stretch Fulham’s defence and the full-backs to offer width - which Coleman can’t do anymore.

it just quickly became bogged down and our slow, lethargic midfield couldn’t get near Fulham’s

it was poor, because it didn’t need to be that way. We could have matched them physically with one or two different players in the XI, and those players were available

King, Iwobi and our normal 2 centre backs would have sufficed

Why did we sign King if we don't want to pick him with our main CF out.

The side had 3 luxury players in midfield who can't tackle, run or track opponents. An arrogant team selection thinking we just had to turn up.

King isn't fully fit. 56th minute he come on - we didn't improve an inch.

Iwobi? The same Iwobi who had a woeful game vs Spurs? He scored the lowest out of everyone in ours and BBCs player ratings;

... Yeah that would have sorted it all. We'd have been loads better with Iwobi...

Honestly...

As for 3 luxury players in midfield, who else could he turn to? Allan is on the bench for the first time back and clearly not fully fit. Too important a player to risk.

Who else then who could come in and replace those 3 luxury players "who can't tackle, run or track opponents"

Playing the defensive full backs and not dropping Keane and Mina was what I would have done. The midfield exposed the full backs but that midfield couldn't genuinely have been expected to cover for attacking full backs either.

You can't play those three in midfield and Coleman and Digne and expect to be solid. The team was extremely wrong in my opinion. We should have played Iwobi 100% in my mind. We need balance in the side and got none of that last night. I hate seeing an Everton team so badly outran and outfought and it's not acceptable. If players don't put in a shift then they shouldn't play.

You've not answered my question.

You said;

King come on with plenty of time to go and 1-0 down, we didn't improve. He's not fully fit.
Iwobi stunk the place out in the previous game - quantifiable by fan ratings. Rightly dropped.

But the main question I'd like to ask you is on your shout of;

  • The side had 3 luxury players in midfield who can't tackle, run or track opponents. An arrogant team selection thinking we just had to turn up.

I agree the midfield was the problem - it's too passive and off the ball a waste of space.

You've said his team selection was arrogant thinking we just had to turn up.

So please, do tell me what other options in midfield he should of used.

I've said before, I just think the '4 centre back' thing is a massive oversimplification. We were getting men behind the ball, sitting extremely deep, asking players to be extremely disciplined and work very hard defensively. The constant focus on who the full backs are in the system is just missing the point spectacularly in my opinion, as is holding on to the belief that everything would be fine if we just went back to that. It's a bit like last saturday when everyone was claiming it was obvious that Mina was the key to defensive solidity and it was no surprise we'd conceded 3 without him, only for us to promptly concede 4 after reinstating him.

Yes I remember and you're point was a perfectly valid and well made one. I have a different view but it doesn't mean I'm right and you're wrong as we (like everyone else) are two guys on a football forum giving a view.

However, as a point of order, we did not try 4 CB's, loading the team with height and relying on set pieces in the same way. Or if we were trying that, then it would be a reall foolhardy plan, as you're leaving out our two biggest players.

I am quite happy to accept the point that 4 CB's my not work. That the 7 game run we've had is a bit of an abheration (and probably not quite long enough to generalise from, it's kind of on the boundary) and that if we play more games we get mean reversion. I'm very open to that theory, but it hasn't happened yet.

I'll be completely honest as well, I don't think Coleman is good enough anymore. I try to avoid writing people off, and he's been a great servant, but thats where we are now. I'm not saying Godfrey or Holgate are good enough either but they are
1) Younger, 2) achieve better results and 3) (and this is just my opinion) better.

As for Mina, I'm not sure he's the solution to our defensive woes, he played midweek when we conceded 4. I do think he would help on set peices though, as he's very big and very good in the air. But the evidence doesn't really show any single change makes a big difference, it's more that when they have played together, the back 4 of Holgate, Mina, Keane and Godfrey have been very solid. At present I cant say that about any of our other back fours.

So I mean if we asre trying the same tactics as when we had 4 CB's (2 of them huge) with 2 smaller CB's and two full backs, that doesn't seem sensible to me at all. I think he tried to play a different way and failed. It's up to Ancelotti if he wants to use the rest of this season as a trial and error exercise, but me personally I would go back to what has worked best so far.

I'm not really sure any of them press high up the pitch. West Ham and Villa sit quite deep. None of them are top teams who put us under lots of pressure and try to retain possession.

They did agains us. That’s the issue here we have been sussed out. Even if teams generally don’t play that style of football their managers have cottoned on to how easy it is to break us down and nullify us. We have ZERO response and that’s a major major worry.

Just on midfield, it looked to me like Doucoure was playing wide right. I can't fathom that. We seemed to do the same at Newcastle and it didn't work ther either.

The bottom 10 have us sussed out at Goodison definately. It's all the more reason why I find his selection, playing into their hands more odd.

We dont have a central defender good on the ball. The 4 we have are more or less average (Keane Mina) bad (Holgate), or to young and not ready for the big battles. Midfield is the most unathletic in the league. Somebody (brandts) has bought a pile of crap (Gomes, Bernard, Iwobi, Rodriguez). Now we are stuck with them for 2,3 years. Nobody will buy them and they wont leave with the money they get.
