My only theory is both Liverpool & Nike released a statement in September, Liverpool confirming they were their biggest selling kits of all time & Nike saying sales exceeded all estimates.

I only had a quick google & that was the theme of everything, hence I wondered was there something I had missed. Everything you reference about recession and changing markets spot on though

Well I'm sure it was better selling than New Balance. Theyd just won the league etc. The New Balance level of sales, would have seen them earning the same money (give or take). Both Nike and Liverpool expected much bigger sales.

You'll have to direct me to said positive statements about how very happy they were. It sounds on the face of it like a face saving PR statement fed to the media from how its described.

A lot has changed since then. Assumptions within football have proven to be untrue. Ed Woodward was very candid and clear about difficulties with sponsors. I doubt it's a Manchested United thing, when you factor all else in.

We will only know when accounts are raised of course. Maybe they will have the forecast revenue that will see the deal generate 80-100m as forecast for LFC or more for Nike. I'm guessing they will be a long way off those Mike stones, but we will see.

Either way, in this market place, the idea Nike are going to break all tradition within football and fund a signing of that nature is ludicrous. I'm not even sure it would be legal in football governance (player ownership) or FFP either.

Theres probably a very very slim route to Liverpool buying Mbappe, but I'm really not sure that's it mate.

Leicester need a good run with injuries. They have a decent squad but 2 or 3 players are crucial, same as with any team.

Last season they were nailed on champions league prior to shutdown, but had key players injured when we came back and fell away badly. This season the only key injury they've had out is Ndidi who missed 9 games. The Turkish CB was out but Fofana is probably better anyway and the Turk can't get back in the team now. Maddison was restricted to the bench for the first 3 games but they won those anyway.

Elsewhere, City have had issues with a striker but all their other key players have been fit and mostly played every game. Same too with Spurs and Man United, hardly any injuries between them. Chelsea have generally worked with a fully fit squad. Pulisic and Ziyech have had injury problems but they have top drawer cover for both. Arsenal haven't had any severe injuries that I'm aware of and, although Liverpool have had their problems at CB, the rest of the squad has been pretty much free of injury apart from Thiago and Jota. They moan about Jota being out but Salah, Mane and Firmino have been available every game. Southampton have been pretty much injury free bar a handful of games when Ings was missing, whilst Wolves have seemingly fallen apart because their main striker is out.

If we put aside Liverpool's issues at CB, and City's issues with the striker, out of all the teams challenging, only Everton have had a really bad run with injuries. Only Doucoure has been ever present and out of what was arguably our preferred starting XI at the beginning of the season, Holgate has missed 9 matches, Digne and Coleman 8 each, Allan, James and Gomes 5 each, and Richarlison 4. It would have been more had we not had 2 matches cancelled.

I'm not looking for excuses, in fact it's the opposite because I'm amazed that we are where we are given the injuries we've had to our key players. All I'm saying is that we're still in touch despite these injuries. If we can get a decent run and other clubs start picking up injuries, nothing is out of the question. Plus all the teams around us start their European fixtures again in 4 weeks time and that is bound to work against them. We need luck with injuries plus the sort of VAR decisions we were getting up to the derby match. But if we get the Everton back that we saw in those first 7/8 games of the season, I think it would be daft to rule us out completely, and certainly a top 4 place is achievable.
Looking at City’s and united benched tonight and compared them to ours
That’s the main reason we won’t win the league
As you say with a good run without injuries we may sneak top 4 but 5/6 is more likely

Think our squad depth is a real issue in the 'race' for top 4. Our first choice starting 11 can hold its own, but one or 2 injuries in key positions and we could well find ourselves in a bit of bother.

That said, where we've had injuries, we've patched up or changed system to compensate, but it's not sustainable across the season.

Hopefully we add one or two in Jan to add some more option off the bench.

Ok. So who was the legal team from then?

Well the link has this in it:

Guy Morpuss QC, representing the club, argued that the claim was “really an attempt by New Balance to use a matching clause for a purpose for which it was never intended”.

TBH I don't give a toss who, what or why they all want to argue about what is on the right tit of a full kit wearing cult member, and the more it costs them the better as far as I am concerned, it just seemed a bit odd that Nike would fight on behalf of the RS as you stated in your post earlier, so I had a quick google.

If you have different info then ok no worries

Looks like the club took the legal action mate. I thought Nike provided legal assistance, but happy to stand corrected on that point!

I'll check, but it's most of the first team squad. A quick of fete perhaps, or more that the money isn't currently available to go extending contracts.

In 2.5 years they have
Firmino
Mane
Salah
VVD
Fabinho
Henderson
Posh boy Chamberlain
Shaqiri

Almost all of the will be 28 and upwards when renegotiating as well. Milner is the season before, and Wijnaldum this summer.

Thats a lot of contracts that need to be extended this summer...a few of them will surely be touted around europe for silly fees.

They will have real problems if they dont finish top 4 this season.

Soured the relationship with New Balance as well. Classy...

6 guaranteed first team starters are out of contract in 2023
So one would expect those contract talks to start next summer
No CL next season to go along with the loss of matchday revenue this season would affect those talks

We just need to keep winning, if we can beat Leicester that puts us in a strong position, 2 games in hand is great but we need to win them

That side was built with a single aim - to get the monkey off their backs. It worked, and they got a European Cup in the bargain.

Henry has run the Red Sox the same way - load up for a run, get everything you can in the window, and retool. It will be interesting to see whether or not that works as well in football as it has for him in baseball.

OT: It's hard to see how City doesn't win the title if they stay healthy. I'm not sure that anyone else is even capable of following them into the mid-80's as a final points tally.

If they don't stay healthy, and the number for the title ends up being high 70s to 80 or so, it's going to be a very close run with a lot of teams in the mix.

With Augerooooooooooooooo to come back ,Stones showing form ,Dias being class, Laporte fit ,Foden showing consistency I think they have the best squad in the country by a long shot
As you say once most of them stay fit, I cannot see anything other than City winning their third league title in 4 years ( all under Pep ) and 5 in the last 10
And yet the media claim Liverpool to be the best side in the country and Klopp a genius

I mean for some perspective, we do have 4 ourselves. James, Allan, Digne and to a point Mina. So where they are 6/7 we are 3/4.

Of those players there is less "value" and expected earnings tied up in them. I would imagine most of the Liverpool lads are also after bigger deals,a nd it will be difficult.

For us the only one who is as tricky as theirs is probably Mina. 120k p/w apparently which is a big commitment. Whether we want to go again for 3 or 4 years I don't know. So we can probably look at him closely and see how he does over 12 months, Can he stay fit and consistent. If he can he can be ione of the best cb's in the league, but thats the challenge.

Digne a deal is apparently very close.

Allan and James will be 31 when their deals run out and given their personnal loyalty to Ancelotti and they joined a side in 12th,you'd imagine we will wait quite late and review later on on 1 year rolling deals, which again is fine. Or the hope might be in Allan's case, in 2.5 years time we have really moved beyond a 31 year old Allan and he can leave.

The Liverpool 8 or 9 they have is a big problem. They will all want bigger money. They will not want any of them walking out for free or at best heavily reduced prices. It's going to be fun watching the navigate it.
