2024/25 Charly Alcaraz

He's better than what we have. Not hard that, though is it?

Is he better than what we could sign?

Clubs have also been keen to get shut of him - I'd trust Moyes more than perhaps any other manager for character assessments.
I like him. He looks a terrier when in the mood, as well as having some obvious quality with the ball.

I've got a cob on with Moyes atm but in general there should always be alarm bells when a manager consistently doesn't pick a player that seemed to start well.

Enthusiasm can do funny things I guess. Gomes looked a baller on loan and then proceeded to be catastrophically bad. Busting a lung to impress new fans is great but when you run out of steam and then get in a strop when you're not played as a result, it's very possibly curtains.

£15m is not loads in this era, but it is still £15m. I desperately want him to be as good as I think he is, but the signs aren't great. If in doubt, swerve.

I'm literally just responding to the points you're making though? The simple point I was making is that if Alcaraz were to fail here we would be unlikely to get our money back on him, because generally that isn't how it works. You have argued against that so I pointed out that we have seen other players over recent years, but you said that was only because we signed players who were too old. I'm now saying that isn't the case and giving you examples. All I'm saying is just assuming we'd get our money back on a player who has failed for the second time in the PL and also in Serie A seems slightly unrealistic, but you clearly disagree with that for reasons i'm still not entirely clear on.
You're not just responding to what I'm saying, you're picking and choosing bits and pieces to suit the point that you want to make, while ignoring the parts that don't gel with what you're saying

I do want us to bring down the average age of the squad, but I've not said that our previous financial woes come down only to the age of the players signed. In fact I have repeatedly been very clear that the issue I'm talking about is that we were consistently signing players on far higher wages than they would ever be worth, regardless of age.

Every club makes bad signings, we are not the only team to have ever signed a load of players who aren't good enough. The difference with us that caused a death spiral was us giving all of those players contracts upwards of 80k a week, making it impossible to move them on and recoup any money spent bringing them in.

As for Alcaraz, to say he's failed in the PL and Serie A is harsh imo. By all accounts he was Southamptons best player while he was there. Juve loaned him, didn't play him and then declined to sign him permanently, but that doesn't mean much to me as Juve have been a basket case club for a while.

If we look at his transfer history since leaving Argentina - Southampton bought him for 10m and sold him to flamengo for 15m after he lost his place in the team. Flamengo then (hopefully) move him on to us for 15m again after a new manager comes in and says there is no role for him in his set up. A year spent playing for Everton doesn't see his value suddenly tank. If we were unable to get a fee of 10-15m for Alcaraz a year from now it would come down to whoever is in charge of transfer negotiations at Everton not doing their job effectively.

Ok mate, you’ve worn me down. You’re right about everything, and are a better judge of player and value than any professional currently working. All of the stuff you’ve posted makes total sense and in no way comes across like you’ve just taken a stance and refuse to move away from it whatever happens. Best of luck in your new role once kopite kev has moved on.

Because all I ever took issue with was him saying we would be ‘certain’ to get our money back even if he flopped and instead of saying ‘yeah fair enough you never know do you’ hes replied every time saying he’s right and whatever explanation I’ve used is wrong. I was trying to give a light hearted reply to show that I still didn’t agree with him but wasn’t going to clog up the thread anymore. Hope that’s ok boss.

Is there a clause with number of games started that we have to buy now or something?
Maybe that’s the reason he isn’t starting.

Worth to buy at that price given his potential and flip him if it doesn’t work

We need options given the state of the squad at the end of the season

I'll let you off with a yellow*

*cos we would get our money back and then some.
