Chelsea 3-3 Everton

I was referring to sometime after his footballing debut, and not his visit to Goodison.
His name came from the Tranmere supporters, not ours. Any true fan of his wouldn't call him Dixie, as the guy didn't like it.

I thought the reference was to his debut for Everton rather than his debut for Tranmere Rovers. Some say it was a bastardisation of a childhood nickname "Digsy", a name he earned as a result of his heavy-handedness when playing tag.

Digsy is an old Birkenhead nickname, my nephew has been called that all his life, amongst other things. To my knowledge he had the name before he came to EFC and he hated it strangely enough. One tale suggests that the name Dixie was given to him because of his hair, dark complexion and large eyes, he looked a tad like a Mississippi minstrel, what ever the truth is he was one hell of a player

That's interesting, Monty. In one book I remember them speculating that the switch from "Digsy" to "Dixie" may even have been down to a journalistic or typographical error in an early match report which subsequently stuck - perhaps due to popular perceptions as regards his physical appearance.

Thanks for your comments GoD & BB, but you're rather stating the bleedin' obvious. I'm hardly likely to be talking about reference to a childhood nickname of "Digsy" & not be familiar with the popular reasoning for the nickname "Dixie", or the fact that he prefered to be called Bill & would tell new players to the club to do so.

Decent point, third in a row at the Bridge. Not many take something from there these days.

What's happened to this thread though? Did Bill (Dixie) Dean play today or something?

Yeah was that the 3000th game you've watched? Did you see Dixie Dean's debut?

Dixie Dean didn't have a debut.
He got the name some time after.

Really? I recall reading that he already had the nickname when he arrived at Goodison Park.

I think you'll find we greeted your attempted correction on our conversation about DD with a little more manners.

Well hoooooweeeeee to yooooouuuuuweeeeee toooooweeeeee!

If your conversation was private why post it on a forum?
I didn't seek correct you as such, merely made reference to something I'd read that seemed pertinent. Please don't be offended by my lack of sensitivity, however, my thanking you for your helpful comments was hardly impolite, I thought. Would your hurt feelings be assuaged if I were to thank you profusely instead? Jog on!

While we're on the subject of politeness, I note that my earlier post in this thread which I started off : "To be fair to BB, he has a reasonable point about the quality of football generally under Moyes ..." didn't result in any +ve rep - thank goodness I'm not one for petty points scoring!
