Subs saw Kenny replacing an injured Pennington, Barkley coming into midfield in place of McCarthy and Lennon replacing Dowell on the right.

The important thing to take note of is that he played a balanced side with a system that suited the players and no one was played out of position.

What stands out to me is that Pennington was given the nod over Kenny, might suggest he'll go for Holgate over kenny on Wednesday but Kenny has a few more games under his belt now and plenty of experience being part of the first team squad now so I think kenny will start.

Another thing that stands out to me is Barry playing, makes me think Rooney will start for his experience.

Good spot with needing experience in the side. Rooney in midfield next to Davies and Gueye? For me it would mean dropping Vlasic who I believe should be getting his minutes centrally.

I wouldn't disregard Rooney in midfield but if so I would rather it be as a 10 and not deeper.

FFS! In fairness, fielding a twelve man team is underrated.

As a 10 I'm not so sure. I'd prefer the 10 be a bit more mobile. I'd like to see his giant arse plonked on the half way line dictating play and spraying balls to a pace you front three.

He does get up and down thepitch though so he could be worth a shout. If he was the same player in his first season he would be first name on the team sheet for me

Definitely see the logic of having Rooney as a deep-lying player due to his passing ability. Will he have the Gareth Barry positional awareness and defensive discipline to play that role though? I'm not so sure.
