Yeah they used to be called fishcakes, probably even had some fish in them at one point.

Then someone pointed out that you can't call them that with them having a complete absence of fish.

Probably the bloody EU or something. Bring back our fishless fishcakes.

None of that 'healthy' bread crumbs  sh stuff, no trendy tempura either, got to have that old style rockhard bright orange batter.

I’ll always remember my mate convincing me that those potato scallops were infact sheep’s bollocks.

I was a bit naive in my younger years.

Was years until I knew scallops are supposed to be fish

Made some today ; equal quantities of mash, seasoned with salt and loads of pepper, and packet sage and onion stuffing. Shape into a savoury shape (might try balls next time) coat in flour and then in beer batter in moderate heated oil, and Bob's your uncle, authentic chippy savoury - they were delicious.

I use this recipe (without the vinegar) and it gives a lovely crispy batter. You can also freeze the excess and it'll work just as well the next time you use it.

These Savourys you guys talk about sound like what we call Pasties over in NI.

Potato, Breadcrumbs, Sausage Meat (usually) and herbs formed into a fishcake sized disk then battered and deepfried.

There was an ace chippy on Cherry Lane, opposite the gates to Anfield cemetery.

Best steak and kidney pies, fish cakes, I ever tasted.

We used to bevvy in the Hermitage, then head down there for a walking supper home.

Absolutely add any ingredients you can! But limit the ingredients you put in that might release liquid while cooking.

Hermitage was a great pub..the chippy is a part of the sports type bar I think now, My inlaws still live at back in willaston .
