The fibre optic one is the better choice, Vim. Getting [Poor language removed] needles everywhere is a real pain in the arse. Plus, those trendy artificial ones actually look really nice.

On your second point, I do believe that traditionally speaking it is the 24th December when you would put the tree up, which is the first day of the twelve. But perhaps I'm wrong.

Exactly. I'd go for the Barolo, the King of Wines, before its cheaper relative, but a decent Nebbiolo is worth its weight in gold (or is that weight in grape?).

I agree James,which is why i've just invested in 54 bottles of Beck's lager and a bottle of Russian Standard Vodka...oh, and another three tubes of pringles.
