Clattenburg

"Mark Clattenburg has come under criticism from Juventus boss Antonio Conte, who claims the Premier League official isn't up to the "required standard".

The Serie A giants were knocked out of the Europa League at the semi-final stage by Benfica last night after an ill-fated 0-0 second leg in Turin.

Clattenburg sent off visiting defender Enzo Perez in the second-half before an angry confrontation on the touchline saw substitutes Mirko Vucinic and Lazar Markovic both shown the red card.

And the top flight referee has today been slammed by Conte for his performance.

The Juve boss said: "I didn't appreciate either the attitude of our opponents or the referee.

"UEFA should show us more respect by sending a referee of the required standard.

"The referee allowed them to obstruct the play the whole game. Before the game he told us that he wouldn't stop play every time a player hit the floor, but that's what happened".

Not everyone in football thinks that Clattenburg is the 'best ref around'.
It was very fortuitous that game happened and Clattenburg was under the microscope after it. The Juventus game was played 4 days before he took charge of the Crystanbul game and I'm convinced he would have made an outrageous decision in Liverpool's favour if his credibility wasn't on the line.

Clattenburg and Dowd are two best refs in PL atm but Oliver is future Webb.

Finn, you are a good chap but the bit in bold

Im serious, he's top notch

I've seen quite a few of his matches in which he's done extremely well. I've also seen the opposite. So its hard to say.

Being one of the best refs in the EPL in no way implies you are a good ref IMO.

I think negs should be used in extreme cases......

This is one !

Most games i see clattenburg in, he is controversial, loves the spotlight etc etc.... plus my Liverpool friends at work love him, that is cause for concern.

Your on the wind up arent you ?!

not at all. I wanted him to be hurt a lot 8 years ago but over the past two years he has become a top top ref, always looking for the advantage, takes it back for a free kick if it's in a promising position and the only out ball is backwards. He reads the game like a footballer. I mean look at Osman's goal this year against West Ham, he played a great advantage.

I appreciate your opinion but we agree to disagree, most games i watch with him officiating there is controversy, i know that all referees are under the microscope in recent years but Clattenburg stands out to me.
My personal favourite is Bobby Madely, he is firm and fair. One of clattenburgs horrible traits is he always stops for a chat with his pal Stevei, but others are told to do one. For the record only a players pulled for a foul and the team captain should be able to speak to a referee.

We can agree on the latter part of it. He does think he is bigger than the game all the time. Like he is best mates with all the players. But as a ref i think hes the best we have in our country unfortunately.

Top ref eh?

You'll find he's upset just about every club (bar the shi'ite) in the PL at one time or another in the last 8 years.

He's a nincompoop. And he's not very good at being one of them.
