I know the game is a lot faster these days and the strain it causes is probably higher

That being said, players have never had better training, with even lower league clubs having the sort of facilities top leagues didn’t have 30-50 years ago when players played more

It’s an overly strict and sometimes gruelling lifestyle/career, but it’s over in 15-20 years and you can be set for life when it’s over

When people are working two jobs and needing to visit food banks just to survive, millionaires complaining that they work too hard feels quite grotesque tbh

Managers need to trust more than the top 13-14 players in their squad. If you’re in Europe you surely have enough good players to rotate properly and most of them just won’t do it. That’s the ultimate solution.
Often teams in the lower European competitions struggle domestically. Most clubs don’t have squads like the top six.

5 allowed subs + a concussion sub
25 man squads instead of 18.
9 substitutes on the bench instead of 5.

Issue is...none of the top managers ever use them. In fact I'll be surprised how many subs they use over a season per game on average.

The whole point of introduction these was to help them over the course of a season and it never gets used.

100% pressure from the money teams and the FA bows

Money doesn’t change biology. The human body can only take so much.

Footballs is less physical now and the players are more protected than they've ever been.

The argument is that the players can't maintain high levels of performance over the period. But that's the point of squads and the purpose of the competition.

Additionally sports science is over cautious in it's approach that they stop players training for reaching "peaks" to offset a possibility of injury or fatigue not a certainty. Rooney gave an example of the fact that sometimes players can't even do additional shooting practice due to sports science advice.

Even if there wasn't an abundance of games, coaches and managers would still complain about player welfare because they want them to be peak condition every game.

Gone with "No - get on with it you’re paid a fortune", mainly becuase they can go many places in world earn a fortune in various leagues and have an easier time of it. Most can withdraw from international football

If those same players are getting pelters from people for not putting in quality performances game in game out and then carrying it through to Summer tournaments then they're probably justified in mentioning how many games they're playing.

Most players aren't whining about it or saying they're working too hard - they're just stating that there is a physical effect from a congested calendar and a lack of breaks.
