What's your top 5 video games and top 5 most disappointing games?
For me, top 5:
Swos 96/97
Red dead redemption (the first one)
Super Mario 3
Grow up
Shenmue 2
Biggest disappointments:
Cyberpunk 2077
Final fantasy 8
GTA 4
Headhunter (on Dreamcast)
Every FIFA (excluding wc98)
What's your top 5 video games and top 5 most disappointing games?
Top:
GL Quake (PC - basically the introduction of 3Dfx/polygons/textures in general)
Orig Zelda (NES)
EverQuest (PC - contrary to the "social interaction was unlike anything before" proclamations of @Tubey in regards to WoW..."EQ" pre-dates WoW by over 5 years and it's just one example, Ultima Online being another. WoW was a direct rip-off of EQ due to how much money SOE was pulling in from subscription fees.)
Baldurs Gate (PC)
Orig Deus Ex (PC)
Worst:
Don't know, I tend to forget them quickly as they're not worth discussing.
Great question.
Top 5:
Deus Ex
Hitman: Blood Money
Guild Wars
Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction
Monster Hunter: World
Top 5 disappointments:
Sudeki
Diablo 3
Final Fantasy 8 (not a bad game, just not what I wanted)
Mass Effect 3 (the single-player; co-op multiplayer was good)
Civilization III
To be clear, my biggest disappointments were all launch day titles for me that (other than Sudeki) weren't "bad" games, but rather were ones that left me cold.
There's a ton of games outside my top 5 that are well worth talking about.
Yeah aware of Everquest - played it in fact. WoW took the ball and ran with it in a way EQ and its' sequel never did, at least for me. It was just more accessible, attracted a wider player base.
For a similar reason, Runescape - which I loved, and still occasionally play today (OSRS anyway) - would make my top 50 probably. But probably due to RS and EQ being based on old-school MUDs, they aren't comparable to what WoW did IMO with the genre.
EQ2 was stupid in the aspect of it was competing with it's predecessor, which people had already poured hundreds (over 1k easily, for many) of hours in to, plus they were still making expansions for it, so nobody wanted to jump ship. Plenty were running both early on (SOE=$$$$) but EQ2 was a hardware monster for years because they didn't want to fall in to the same trap they did with EQ (locked in to a game engine) so most ditched it. Add to that, it was a fairly empty world initially.
I can't think of one thing WoW did (I'm sure there are some small things here and there) that EQ didn't do gameplay-wise. It just attracted a bigger audience due to Blizzards name/former work, EQ not being able to keep with the times due to being software limited and the fact it was MUCH easier...very few classes could solo in EQ, so it forced group play/social interaction on almost every level, nevermind raids.. WoW was a cakewalk in terms of difficulty and most people don't like getting their a$$ kicked on the reg, only to also lose experience that was a grind to claw back.
It was not a game-changer in terms of gameplay/core mechanics, though...have to disagree there, big time.
This talk is making me reminisce about that time in PC gaming...scene exploded and it was ATI's heyday...never had a video card last as long as the Radeon 9700 Pro, what a card.

Ps4 pro. What are you playing it on?
Wow can't believe I left that off my list.
What a train wreck that was. That auction house...
People coming out saying ‘well I am enjoying myself, you mad bro? Why so bitter I’m having a good time, you jealous?’
Like dangle keys in front of a newborn baby and they will be entertained. I’m not exactly jealous of that.
