Computer games.

I didn't. I was on Freespace 1/2 and/or haze grey and underway.

aw mate...the X-series is Elite's spiritual successor. MASSIVE Universe, EPICNESS everywhere. Complex trading routes, dramatic dogfights, there's even a story if you want it, but it's entirely open-world. I started on X2 and rebuilt an entire solar system (completely of my own accord) after it was destroyed by some rather abstract alien ships. X3 has nicer graphics, but seemingly less of an engaging mythology.

The X-series is still well worth a play. Freespace is child's play in comparison xx

Yeah, the reviews don't look too good for the first one. It seems the consensus is that X3 is the best of the bunch, but doesn't have so much a learning 'curve', but more like a 'vertical line'

I will probably wait until I can grab it on a steam sale, as I am currently dividing my time between KSP, MWO, Rust and Sid Meier's Pirates.

Aye, the reviews tend to play it safe around the 70% mark. The first one is dated, true. The games do have a huge learning curve, but intensely rewarding if deeply complex sci-fi Space-sim is your thing. You can download a free demo of X3 here when you have the fancy:

I got the Complete Edition for €8 from the local Techmarkt.

Apparently X4 is absolutely pants...shame they dropped the ball here.

My next gaming plans are more console-based and somewhat last-gen: Portal & Last Of Us and completing FFVII one more time. Might finally check out the latest Pro Evo or even FIFA. Toyed a bit with FIFA 12 and enjoyed the full-manual control you could configure.

You space fans should get on eve online and play against real people.

tried Eve. hated the third-person perspective, and the physics of craft movement were just silly.

Not for me. I personally don't go in for these online multi-player games, you really have to put in the hours and if you're teaming up with lids, you have to be playing at certain times. Can understand the appeal, tho'...I've heard some epic stories coming out of Eve.
