Contracts - A seasonal positive

Ahh the ole " I sorted the wages out , by allowing the contracts to run out"

People loved brands for "utilising" time like this.

Maybe that's what a Director of football is now

Thats what brands did...but thelwell has managed to get Iwobi, Gray and possibly Gomes out the door which would be circa £35mil in fees and a sizeable amount of wages. All with one year left.

I will update the expiring contracts but i suspect in jan and summer he will be able to shift out a number of those whose deals expire in 2025.

Previous DOFs also lashed out new contracts for Michael Keane, Jonjoe Kenny and Tom Davies so even if Thelwell has allowed a few to run off contract (or offered them worse terms they wouldn’t accept) it’s a lot better than giving multi year extensions to players who aren’t good enough.

It's a damn good job Brands gave Keane a new contract.

He has played over 30 games most seasons he's been here.

2024 (9)
Gomes
Doucoure
Dele
Gana
Coleman
Young
Lonergan
Harrison (loan)
Danjuma (loan)

2025 (9)
Godfrey
Keane
Maupay
Calvert-Lewin
Virginia
Holgate
Dobbin
Onyango
Branthwaite*1year option

2026 (3)
Mykolenko
Tarkowski
Garner

2027 (6)
Onana
Pickford
McNeil
Patterson
Beto
Chermiti

Of the 18 players out of contract in 2024 and 2025 perhaps the only ones to keep at the moment are DCL, Branthwaite, Dobbin and perhaps Doucoure for his energy/goals.

Other than those 4 we may look to sign Danjuma or Harrison but that leaves us with 12 outgoings.

I think we need to be looking at moving some of those players on proactively in January while we can still bring in fees.

Having the option of an additional year with Branthwaite is good news. I still see him being sold tho.

Rumoured to be discussing an extension.

We need to ensure our best young players are locked down on long term deals.

Even Garners deal expires in 2026 and clearly he should be long term. Also extends the FFP terms on the books for his transfer fee.

By next summer when we 'lose' and offload the dross including those out of contract in 2025 we should have hopefully used some of the space in the wage bill to extend the likes of:

Branthwaite
Garner
Onana
DCL
Dobbin
Patterson
McNeil

Make sure theres a core group in the squad locked down long term.

At this moment we’d only really miss Gana purely for midfield depth, young for depth and versatility, Coleman for full back depth/experience in the club. Reluctantly Doucoure is on that list though I feel his style of play (ie lack of passing/vision) hinders us as much as his athleticism and one touch shooting helps.

I have a feeling Harrison (but not danjuma) will be on the list of players we will be sad to leave from the above very soon.. and actually be the one we miss the most.

Doucoure can be handy for a season as a squad player as hes shown he can bring energy and goals.

Harrison i didnt rate before he joined, happy to give him a chance. Expect thelwell to continue looking for young and value attackers like Gnonto, midfielders like Wharton and to focus a bit more on our defence next summer.

Its all panning out that if we had money it would be ideal timing with so many out of contract that we wont miss.

With regards to Harrison how does it work?

If Leeds don't get promoted (figures crossed) he is available to be loaned again next season?

If they come up, he has to go back. If so, that could be a bit awkward for him. Going back to a club who he bailed on. I doubt those who got the club out of the Championship would be overly impressed.

I really don't want us to sign this Danjuma chap and go for Gnonto proper come January. Full disclosure, I don't particularly like Danjuma and am sour about spending ~3m on his loan fee.
I rate Reece Welch but he requires a lot of actual onfield experience fast to be useful to us, would like him to spend the second half of the season at a league one/abroad side before coming in for a competition. We need an international CB to sign for us to bolster the defense, would be made up if we get that Ito fellow from Stuttgart. I also think Godfrey needs a project to work on to stay competitive, I actually think he is good but has been low on confidence, would be nice if he gets to play instead of Keane when we shift to a three would good with him and Branthwaite on either side of Tarkowski. Only then can we make a decision at the end of the season about Godfrey.
For midfield, we need one more midfielder as cover/rotation incase we don't get to keep Gana/Doucoure (Saudi come in with their wages), I'd like someone like Garner and wouldn't mind someone like Will Hughes at CP or Hannibal Mejbri at United or someone decent scouted from elsewhere (like Guillamon or Thuram).

He had a clause so that he could go on loan to the PL for free incase of relegation.

He also apparently has a release clause (I’ve read around £22m) which is separate from our loan deal. I imagine anyone could activate that so if he has a decent season for us, I can’t imagine him staying at Leeds anyway.
