Cricket

Pretty much all the mainstays of their test side stayed home to play their domestic t20 competition. Really poor. NZ humiliated them.
I'd love to see some form of obligation for cricketers to make themselves available for red ball or international cricket before they can sign franchise deals. Or at least see SA cricket refuse to pick them for T20 games. Too many self interested parties of course and the necessity for survival from each group financially. This is what happens when sports become overly capitalised, and they start eating themselves.

Credit to the NZ players for the value they place in playing international cricket on nowhere near the deals Aussie, Indian or English players can get.

Short careers where they can earn huge amounts of money playing in 12 week tournaments. Of course they are going to go and do that. The reality is most test cricket these days attracts little interest and generates little money.

So every single choice in life is just a highest bidder situation?
Of course it is. They’ve got family to think about. Some players are earning upto 10x what they could do playing red ball. The notion that they should play for pride or honour is daft. What would you do in that situation. Potentially set your family up for life or work for pride.

Pride isn't the sole contributor and I'd be interested in seeing those numbers in terms of each player now earning 10 fold by quitting international cricket. It certainly isn't the binary choice you pretend it is.

I have turned down job offers for significantly more money than I earn due to several factors including moral choices, joy of work, time at home, employer relationahip and even pride. Why do top level thinkers become researchers instead of working in scumbag financial sectors? Why do people train themselves to near death to become doctors instead of just befriending a tory MP in a global crisis? People make career choices based on a myriad of factors and to suggest every single choice in life is simply a highest bidder situation is not only ludicrous but lacks such faith in people its would be incredibly depressing. Ben Stokes doesn't have to play test cricket with a crumbling body, he chooses to for less money. The entire NZ team of good enough to get into franchise cricket, they chose to play for their country.

Comprimises need to be made to look after players, England, India and Australia redistributing more of the wealth in the game would be a start and then players can find a balance between their bank balances and playing at the top of the game.

The Saffas are just a bunch of overrated mercenaries.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but the players didn’t have a choice in this. The South African board mandated that anyone drafted by a franchise in the SA20 was not eligible to be picked for the New Zealand tour.

It feels like they could have worked it better because the final is this weekend and the next test doesn’t start until Tuesday.
