Cricket

You need a squad of bowlers these days, he can fill his boots this summer then hopefully you have him, Robinson, Potts, Tongue, Wood, Woakes and maybe a few othersthan can come in and out.

Obviously the dream is Jofra, Atkinson and Wood lining up in Oz
Yes, but we've seemingly burned through Jacks, Ahmed, Hartley, Tongue as 5 wicket debutants and Fisher, Mahmood, Parkinson, Overton, Potts, Robinson have all been tried and disgarded.

Most of these playes have not been discarded

Jacks has a central contact as does Ahmed who is only 19 and will absolutely play more cicket fo England. Hartley was selected as a specialist for India but will be in the thinking, only one spinner generally plays in England. Tongue is injured and has a central contract. Mahmood has had a two year injury and has to work his way back. Robinson and Potts are very much in the thinking, one of them will probably play when Jimmy goes.

Thats not burning through, thats good development of a squad.

Ahmed, Bashir, Hartley, Leach, Jacks. We've tried all of them, which one will go to Australia for the Ashes? I have no idea.

Robinson feels very much yesterday's man, yet he's been picked ahead of other options who have played well. Woakes won't go to Australia yet he's picked here. It feels like we've tried lots of options but settled on none and in many cases the bowlibg attack has been sacrificed in favour of sureing up a fragile batting unit and the insistence on trying to blow away the tailend with bouncers when line and length has worked against the top order.

If we were going to the subcontinent where they got selected at least 3 of them.

On your second point, have a look at how many times we have taken 20 wickets in the Stokes captaincy era, we pick teams to win games not to shore up the batting. Woakes is playing because he is brilliant in England and winning these test matches matters, Jimmy is being retired because we have one eye on OZ, its a balancing act.

For a mindset which promotes total loyalty for batsmen, it seems we have interchangeable bowlers. And we've given plenty starts then moved on to something new. It's great we've explored options BTW, but I'm not sure what our best bowling unit is (especially if Wood/Archer aren't fit).

We know what Woakes can do, we also know what he can't. It seems odd to be playing him here when we need to find potentially multiple players for overseas cricket.

Stokes captaincy is great in that it forces results, but it's also reckless at times. We looked well short in India and at times looked like we had run out of ideas against Australia. If we want to beat teams overseas we need to work out who we want as part of that bowling attack and establish it.

I hope that's the thinking behind the selection choices, but I'm not convinced.
