Because it isn't playing if it's on lead. My main issue is a couple of specific places really, and it's more of a personal annoyance. One of them is a field where we go to throw the ball and we have been doing that, and despite the fact there is a path that leads past the field and a path around the lake, we have been on it and someone with a leaded dog has then decided to walk around the field instead of the several other paths, meaning I have to put him back on lead. There's nothing in the field, and it's not massive, so it doesn't make sense to me especially when there are off lead dogs already using it.Why should my dog not be allowed to walk or play on dog walking routes, she is well behaved and the reason I don't let her off is she is too friendly and it isn't right for her to just run up to other dogs. That is my responsibility. Before I got my dog spayed the amount of times she was sexually assaulted by male dogs off leads where owners were nowhere to be seen was ridiculous and I even got told she shouldn't be out lol lol
If you let your dog off and it has good recall and isn't aggressive then fine, not all dogs off leads are some are vicious and still let off. My point was though you don't know the personality of other dogs and therefore if you can't stop your dog approaching strangers then it should stay on a lead, that goes for me as my dog approaches everyone.
Problem with dogs in season is that male dogs will pick it up from a good distance away, and regardless of how good recall is, they will go after it, so the owners may well be out of sight. I know when our pup gets a scent, his head goes down. He comes back to the whistle, but we haven't come across a dog in season yet. I know it's recommended to walk early and late when in season, but it's partly why we didn't get a female. Don't know what the answer to that is though unfortunately as they still deserve to be walked.
