Player Valuation: £40m
People missed the title irony in the last thread and insisted on talking about Rooney and Messi so he's got his own thread.

20 goals in the Prem now.

Where is his call up?
The guy is the best out and out striker in the country, so surely he has done enough this season to go to the World cup ahead of Heskey.

Is he a better back-up striker, than Defoe? I don't think so, can he play with Rooney? I don't think so. Can he play the target man,? I dont think so he looks for balls played in front of him, so if you are looking for strikers to go to the world cup then its gotta be rooney and Defoe, with Crouch and Carlton Cole as the big target men to play alongside rooney/defoe.

I'll grant you hes had an exceoptional season, and if ever defoe or rooney got injured then he'd be in as afar as I'm concerned

Rooney might have something to say about that.

But see your point, he nets like. He is one of those who bags loads but just doesn't seem to do it internationally, like a Robbie Fowler or Lee Chapman, retro fans.

Why the immidiate negativity towards the guy?
Is it because he has a beard? Are you saying we can only take 2 strikers to the World Cup?

My top 3 would be Rooney, Bent, and Defoe, with Crouch being up there too. The guy is up there every year in the top scorers, but doesn't play for a top 4 side. Logic tells us if he did he would be unstoppable.

Rooney isn't an out and out striker. He is much more versatile than that.

Basically....he's like Defoe..and the fact Defoe has a better international strike record.

Rooney....best striker in the world so he's going.

Crouch...gives you the hoof option and has a great international record.

Then there is only Heskey/Carlton Cole. The fact Capello has built his team with Heskey being the hold up player means he or Carlton Cole will go.

Bent only goes if Defoe doesnt. They're too alike. The other players - Crouch, Rooney, Heskey/Cole offer more than just being strikers.

Bent should've never went to Spurs to be honest when they had Berbatov and Keane on fire. Was on fire at Charlton and is now on fire at Sunderland. Goes to a "big club" there are players with bigger ego's/talant etc waiting around getting in the way, you could say.

Should've went to a club able to play him week in week out and he'd be in the England squad over Defoe.

I've got nothing against beards...I'm half Viking dont you know! Like I said earlier, he knows where the onion bag is, but I don't think he can play the link/target striker role that say Crouch, Cole or god forbid Heskey can....But he'd be my next choice, if we lost rooney or defoe to injury.

2 strikers, and 2 Target men for me for our WC squad. And in my opinion Rooney should only play out and out striker up the front, not an inside right position, not an inside left poistion, and certainly not any other position, hes an instinctive natural goalscorer, and he belongs as a central striker, thats were he's gonna cause the opposition the most danger

He scores goals, but he does not much else. Heskey offers more in big games, he holds it up and plays people in. Bent is not an International striker, he's just not good enough.

Rooney plays for the Champions and top placed side. Defoe plays for a 4th place team.
Bent plays for a team who have just wiped their foreheads at the fear of relegation. If Heskey goes, it would be a travesty. Only the England of old need a target man. Spain do not need a target man like Heskey. How many would Rooney have scored for Sunderland this season? Or Defoe for that matter. The guy deserves his call up.

Huh?
Heskey offers more, but can't score? I don't buy that at all. Bent is great at holding the ball up.
How many big games do you see Heskey or Bent in in order to compare? To say he's not good enough is utter rediculous. Owen did absolutely NOTHING for England other than score goals. Bit lame that m8.

Spain don't need a target man as they've got 2 of Europes best, quick, fast, deadly strikers in Torres and Villa, who have an excellent understanding, and their midfield is perfectly suited to playing with these 2 up front.

Englands whole qualifying campaign has been based around a big target striker, and a natural pacy skillful striker, why would you want to change our whols philosophy 3 months before a world-cup?

I don't believe that's a WC winning philosophy.
