.......there are lots of contributing factors which determine if a new contract should be offered or a player should be sold. On-pitch performance and injury records are two as is off-pitch contribution or behaviour. If Gibson's contract was up for renewal this incident would likely mean an extension wouldn't be offered. Similarly if an offer came in from another club then this incident would likely mean EFC would accept it.

He's not long signed a new contract which means we pay it up and release him or put up with the injuries and behaviour. I suspect it will be the latter.

Should be sacked no ifs or buts about it. People who drink and drive are gobshites. Full Stop.

I keep repeating myself but I respect that opinion completely if you can honestly say you'd sack stones/McCarthy/lukaku ? I disagree but absolutely respect your opinion if your consistent . Carrying that on I presume you'd chase Duncan from the club as well ? Again I respect your opinion if that's what you feel

Has it ever been acceptable to drink drive and run over a cyclist, before crashing into a petrol pump whilst wearing no shoes?

My comment has been taken out of context FFS.

No it is not acceptable and never has been acceptable to drink drive and run anyone over.

In the past there was more lenience shown towards public figures who offend ie. big Dunc. I stand by my previous comment that Gibson should be heavily disciplined by the club.

In future read the thread before taking a single response out of context.

Any other job sacked for drunk driving really ? I accept that if driving is part of your job then obviously but many other professions I'm confident you wouldn't get the bullet . That's not to say that in many you would but it's not universal and my opinion .

Also as I've stated in my opinion Gibson's lack of appearances and recent injury record contributes to this . I firmly believe that we wouldn't have this conversation about stones or lukaku and I'm sorry that makes it a bit cheap .

There are many professions in OZ where being intoxicated or under the influence is a dismissable offence, and rightly so.

Are you saying that being "intoxicated or under the influence" when one is at work will lead to dismissal or are you saying members of these professions are not allowed to be drunk at all even when not working?

And if it is the latter, which professions would they be?

And if the former, I should imagine pretty much any employer would fire a fellow for being drunk in the workplace.

Of course, it often boils down to how hard the drunk person would be to replace.....I have seen people shown tremendous leniency for transgressing at work simply because firing them would have caused great difficulty for the company.

Everton footballer Darron Gibson has been banned from driving after he hit a cyclist while drink-driving.

The Republic of Ireland star ploughed into three cyclists who had stopped on a pavement to fix a chain on 16 August. Gibson, 27, then struck a pump at a petrol station in Greater Manchester, Trafford Magistrates' Court heard. The ex-Manchester United player pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol, driving without due care and failing to stop after a accident. Witnesses told the court how the Londonderry-born midfielder had been driving "too fast", before he mounted the pavement and collided with the men, leaving one with cuts to his legs, elbow and hand.

He was said to have then driven off at speed, following the crash near his home town of Bowdon, before the crash at the petrol station minutes later. The court heard a concerned petrol attendant called police after Gibson got out of his car with no shoes on and filled his vehicle with fuel. Arresting officers said they noticed an "obvious strong smell of alcohol" on his breath.

Gibson was taken to a police station where he gave a positive reading of 57mg per 100ml of breath - the legal limit is 35.
Subhanar Chowdhury, prosecuting, said the defendant fully acknowledged in interview what he had done. Chair of the bench Susanne O'Connell told the player the failure-to-stop offence was "serious enough" to merit a community penalty. She banned Gibson from driving for 20 months and ordered him to pay compensation of £4,500 for the damaged bicycle and £1,000 to the injured biker Philip Quinn - plus £100 each to the other two cyclists. He was also sentenced to a 12-month community order, with an unpaid work requirement of 200 hours.

What they're not saying there.

If he steps out of line again.

That community order will be used against him.

If he steps out of line again he'll get a custodial sentence and I could see that being at least a year.
