The Home Grown player rule took effect at the start of the 2010/11 season and involves all Premier League Clubs.

All 20 Clubs must include eight Home Grown players out of a squad of 25 for that Premier League season.

A Home Grown player will be defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).

Clubs are able to supplement their squads with unlimited additional players under the age of 21 on 1st January in the year in which the season commences.

25 Squad players (*=Home grown)
*Baines, Leighton John
*Barkley, Ross
*Barry, Gareth
Besic, Muhamed
*Cleverley, Thomas William
Coleman, Seamus
Funes Mori, Jose Ramiro
*Gibson, Darron Thomas Daniel
*Hibbert, Anthony James
Howard, Timothy Matthew
*Jagielka, Philip Nikodem
Kone, Arouna
*Lennon, Aaron
*Lukaku, Romelu Menama
*McAleny, Conor Michael
*McCarthy, James
McGeady, Aiden John
Mirallas Y Castillo, Kevin Antonio Joel Gislain
Naismith, Steven John
*Osman, Leon
Oviedo Jimenez, Bryan Josue
Pienaar, Steven
Robles Blazquez, Joel
Rodriquez, Leandro Joaquin

We currently have 12 HG players.

Hibbert, Osman, Gibson are out of contract, Lukaku and Stones are heavily linked away, Barry could look to move on, same with McAleny, which would leave us with only 5 HG players.

I know a lot of people would like to see us get rid of McCarthy and The Clev, but I think the HG might factor in a lot of our business this Summer.

from something @MoutsGoat posted in another thread which really is very applicable to why we have likely re-signed Gibson

The other half told me last week gibson was getting a new 2 year contract. I didn't pay much attention as she knows next to nothing about football. Looks like she was right although the most worry thing is she told me it was 50 grand a week.

What a terrible day to be an Everton fan. First we get the dreadful news that the club has agreed to donate probably up to 30 thousand pounds a week to a player who will likely play less than 20 games over the next two years, then we hear Stones is about to be sold, all while we are still managerless!

Not exactly fuming at this cause the guy can actually pass a ball.

But surely we can afford someone who isn't injured all the time now we are mega rich?

Suppose it saves us a few quid instead of having to spend a few million on a squad player. Truth doesn't deserve a new contract though considering his injury record and off-the-field issues and therefore should consider himself very fortunate. Lot of other clubs (and workplaces) would have gotten rid. Next season I think will be the make or break year of his entire career.

Taxis don't come cheap.

You said he couldn't pass the ball forwards mate

That's outrageously unfair

You're making him out to be crap when he really isn't

He's not especially GOOD or anything, but he's a solid choice in the middle of the park and is definately Premier League level when he remains fit (But he's never fit, which is why I wouldn't have renewed him)

Spade a spade at the end of the day

Okay, let me qualify better what I meant.

In my opinion, whilst DG can obviously pass the ball forward, the number of times he does so to true, hurtful, damaging the opposition effect is very, very limited.

Let's be honest, in terms of being a truly offensive/effective midfielder, he's no Fabregas, Ramsey, or even a Drinkwater type is he?

Now couple that to a fitness record that is woeful, a lack of any genuine pace, he's not a ball-winning tackler, he's not great in the air and again, in my opinion, you have a squad member who potentially contributes very, very little for most of the time.

You say he's not especially good, so if we're looking to move up the league table and threaten the top six, we need much better than the good that he's not. We need players to be good+ to great... or ideally outstanding !

DG is great at absolutely nothing and as such his playing time at the very, very best even allowing for full fitness is going to be very limited... and that's why he's not a good fit for the 'new Everton' but might be a great fit for a top ten team in the Championship.

And whilst it's obvious I am far from his biggest fan, if he goes into the pre-season 100% fit and suitably impresses RK that he gets selected, then I wish him well, I really will... but if his fitness wheels come off again, injuries rear their ugly heads again and he becomes again, the fringe, squad player I believe him to be at this level... I won't take any pleasure from it.

Gibson is great at passing

Probably one of the best passers we have in the whole team

Sorry, I'm not having a go at you here, but I tend to get pedantic on these issues

Me and @Tubey had something like a 5 page argument once because he said Phil Neville was the worst Everton captain ever

I'm no Phil Neville fan, but to say that he was the worst out of every captain we'd ever had when the team he captained reached a Cup Final was unfair and I contested it

You're completely understating Gibson's passing prowess
