Dave Watson appreciation thread

Seen him and Peter Beardsley at Newcastle's training ground the other week didn't recognize him at first he's completely bald, and if it wasn't for his initials on his training top I probably I wouldn't of recognized him, your right a great player for us. You have to give Kendal great credit he could've easily stuck with Mountfield but took the difficult decision to replave him with Watson.

I don't think 'legend' is far wide of the mark. League champion and FA Cup winner FFS! And (alright, not with us I know) he also won the League Cup, meaning he's got the full domestic set. Way better defensively than Mountfield and as good a skipper as we've had in decades. Shame he joined two years later, as he'd have walked into the 84/85 side IMO. Definitely a great, quite possibly a legend, and @Groucho is right - oddly overlooked when that term is thrown around, especially when people use it in connection with Ferguson and Cahill.

Anyone putting forward names like Gough or Stubbs or Weir as acceptable Everton CBs and leaders need to re-focus on Watson. I put those in a category barely above the Carl Tilers and Jagielka's of this world. He was the real deal. The last great. Everyone that's been here since is just us making do and mending.

I think Jagielka has been a solid servant, and I'd place him above Stubbs and Weir. Not captain material though, and not close to 'great' status. As you say, Watson was very much the real deal, and that's the level of player to which we should ideally aspire.

I think Jagielka was miles ahead of Tiler.

But I have to say, 'the last great' crossed my mind when typing the OP.

Met him a couple of times and he is a really sound fella, one of the lads. He missed his first child's birth to play for Everton during one Christmas period. Proper old school.
