He was very very very good. Bit it did all become a bit of a circus around him with England at the end. Not even sure the truth of some of it, but the narrative in the media was it was always about accommodating him. The move to centre midfield and the 'quarterback' position stuff.
I think in the 2006 WC I read that he was asked to play RB against Trinidad and Tobago but refused.

This era. Article blames Erikson here, but others blamed Beckham for demanding he played a certain role irc.

Watching it and I'm surprised by how interesting it is. Partly a bit of nostalgia for the late 90s and early 00s. It's also a really revealing insight into the furore around his 98 world cup red card. I recall he took pelters, but looking back it was really over the top.

I watched the first episode last night, and like you, was surprised that it was so compelling. Decent watch.

And yes, I agree with @DavidH I think Victoria Beckham is quite stunning.

I can certainly remember England were pretty turgid from 2005-2006. Low morale might explain it as that group had previously been much better.

Depends on your definitions IMO. Not a "great" player as in one for the ages. But without a doubt a top player in his time IMO. Probably England's best player from 2000-2006 too.

I dunno mate. He was a good player. Not sure he would have had the profile or opportunities he had if he looked like Paul Scholes. To be fair to him he was always very professional and played with maximum effort, he got the most out of what talent he had and playing for England particularly meant a lot to him, but i think he was overrated personally.

Paul Scholes was twice the player in my opinion - he was the generational talent for me, criminal the way it played out for him at international level, an awful waste. I think he was England's best player and they never recognised it.

Genuinely the most boring man I've seen interviewed, his fake hairline and dyed eyebrows are the most fascinating aspect.

Ironic that he such a quiet and simple fella given how much he sought and drove headlines.
His dyed eyebrows deserve their own series. Incredible and pointless surely?
Why would you do that?
