2024/25 David Moyes

There were a few promising signs against Villa and they came on a step further today. For the first 70/75 mins a pretty solid back line, we soaked up plenty of pressure and took the sting out of it when we needed to either by getting our foot on the ball or by knocking it into the channels and winning a set piece. A bit last ditch in parts, culminating in their first goal (lovely finish) and their second came from a corker of a cross and Michael Keane ball watching.

We scored 2 great goals and forced the third. We could and probably should have scored 2 more in the first half, their keeper kept the score to just 3 and we wasted some really good opportunities in the second half as well.

We faded in the last 20, and we made it more difficult than it should have been, but we deserved the win overall. Lindstrom will get fitter, and hopefully we’ll see Garner starting ahead of Doucoure. We still have a lack in quality in depth and need a signing or two, but more positive signs.

It might be worth noting that the players visibly tired from 60 minutes onwards as they had exerted far more energy pressing and playing higher up the pitch, than they ever did while camped on the edge of their own box and hoofing it back to the opposition all day under the former manager. They will get fitter as they learn the system I have no doubt.
Are you disputing the benefits of Gaffer Day?

Was happy to see that he changed things up with the starting 11 after the Villa game, dropping Harrison, gave O'Brien a start, changed the shape and went to 3 at the back. Not without risks, the latter two points at least, especially against a team that don't have issues scoring, but given what we've seen this season, something had to change.

The way we approached the game with Moyes is far different to how we would've approached it, had Dyche still been our manager, as far as I'm concerned. There's no way we would've been pressing Spurs in their half, creating plenty of good chances in the process, had we still persisted with Dyche.

I wasn't overly enthused with bringing Moyes back to the club, if I was honest with you. He's still not perfect and I didn't agree with the subs he made today, or more the fact they were all defenders he brought on, however at the same time, he is pound for pound a better manager than Dyche and for me there's enough in this team that he can get a tune out of to keep us out of trouble and so far, if we carry on how we have under his two games, we'll stay up fairly comfortably.

What I’ve seen is that we’ve looked more threatening in attack (not hard that must be said) in our last two games and the football generally has been a lot better. Ball retention is still an issue as is our full back areas. I would have happily taken 4 points from our two home games, but I’m not going to lose any sleep getting 3 points, when you consider how the other results have gone our way.
Yeah I felt the Aston Villa game whilst losing was more positive than anything we have seen all season, shoots of positive play. And today on the first half was arguably the best we’ve played. That said, we need to realise this was a Spurs side that is struggling to, so one step at a time.

But I for one, am hopeful for the first time this season. Tell ya this, under Dyche today this game wouldn’t have gone the way it did. Dyche had well and truly lost it.

We certainly wouldn’t have seen the football we witnessed under Dyche in the first half. Dyche showed on countless occasions his one dimensional approach to games, that is great if your winning games (as we did at home towards the end of last season) but we weren’t this season.
Yes my enthusiasm for today’s result is tempered by arguably the worst defensive performance against us this season (along with Wolves) and our finish to the game. Nevertheless we needed to win, we got the win and scored 3 goals. There is a lot of positives to take moving forward.
