Chairman Bill Kenwright added: “Since coming back to Everton as a coach, Unsie has shown everyone what he is - a great coach… a great Evertonian… and a winner.

“While we’re sad to see someone with his talent and love for the Club moving on, we completely understand and respect his decision.

“On behalf of everyone at Everton, I wish him well for what I am sure will be a successful career in management.

“From everyone at Everton, thank you and good luck, Unsie.”

Can't stand Kenwright, the man makes me sick with the nonsense he spouts.
What on earth do you want him to say?

"sling your hook you fat mess? I hope you fail at everything you do"?

There doesn't need to be anything said. It's all just a bit 'luvvy' for me. I've tried not to believe the conspiracy of jobs for the boys and how soft we appear to be but each of them just appear a bit cringey. You would think Unsworth had done a remarkable job. I've nothing personal against Unsworth, I just dont think he's done very well in the job regardless of whether he is sound person or not.

"A great coach" - What evidence of this is there? I've watched the u23's plenty and there never seems to be any set style of how we play or players further pushing on.
"A great evertonian" - I mean, fine he may be, but has zero relevance to whether someone is good at their job or service to a company.
"And a winner" - Won one EPL 2 title was it? Produced very little for the senior level.

If he has had big input on Gordon, then fair play to him as i really rate Gordon and hope he finds that consitency to make him top level. Other than that though, the gap from U23's to Seniors is massive. His job is to keep that job as small as possible.

Perhaps had this been from somebody else it wouldn't irritate me as much.. so perhaps im wrong in finding it cringey, but Kenwright grates me on and is not a positive for this club and it feels like his usual stunt and the whole 'Evertonian' is annoying. It has no relevance as to how someone performs in their job, or whether they are right for the job.

Look at Man City and Liverpool.

How many players have come through their academies the last few years? These are the biggest clubs in the league with huge reach and im sure im missing somebody, but I make it 1 each in Foden and TAA.

I think people expect too much from youth set ups.

Everybody points at the United team, but thats a rare, rare exception.

I know Arsenal are doing ok with theirs atm, but these things are quite rare.

I’m convinced it’s generational. Barca had a brilliant few all together with Messi Iniesta Xavi, then absolutely nothing until Pedri. That’s one of the best academies in the world.

We had a decent flutter with Osman Hibbert Rooney Anichebe Vaughan then a gap to Rodwell Barkley, then a gap to Gordon. I’m sure coaching plays a part in it but I don’t buy into the myth we’d have a conveyor belt of talent if Unsworth left, the numbers seem about average.

Even United had Greenwood and Rashford and that’s been it recently. City with Foden. Chelsea didn’t have a decent kid since Terry really until Mount and James came though. It’s just cycles.

I think its more that the players who are coming through are on the border of that first team and getting some minutes here and there. Should be noted that it is a hell of a lot easier to give minutes to young players when you are flying, winning games comfortably and can give them minutes when the gameis won. A team of City/Liverpool can carry one young player in their squad because they are that good. We are in a dogfight all season and at no point could we have afforded to 'carry' a young lad who needs minutes and experience.

Gordon has done extremely well in what has been a shocking, shocking team.

I think it just feels like our U23s are alot further from the first team, than those at those clubs who are perhaps borderline. We also seem to crap the bed when it comes to buying youth at the right age and bedding them in. Hence we have hte jokes of "another Iverson" etc. Whenever ive watcehd the U23's it just looks like they are not beign developed in the way the first team has been set up.

On the flipside, the first team has changed managers 3 times now in the past 2 years? So another factor.

Long overdue.

He doesn't need to leave his current position(s) to pursue a managerial career, he can obviously still apply for jobs. Quite clear he's been sacked.

changing first team manager every year does youth team players no favours whatsoever though
This is where the new fella sounds like he can fix that. Someone overseeing all levels that can apply some sort of philosophy at all levels.

If they know how to play in the team ahead of time, no reason they can't step in when needed. Unless none of them are good at football then surely we can call on one or two at times to do the basic job of playing football. Even if they end up at Tranmere within 18 months afterwards.

I think it's necessary that Unsworth moves on.

If a gushing statement from Bill oils the wheels to some degree in the matter, then no harm done.

It might be harsh, but stick the knife in and smile on their way out the door. Operative words are out and door. That's how its done.

Should any person underperform in a role and/or a better candidate is available, then the club must do what is necessary, and no more of the old boys network.

Sadly, that is made more difficult by others in senior roles resolutely staying put, but that is an argument for another day.

They haven't came through though, sitting on the bench isn't the same as playing in the first team or a five minute cameo.

The general point is that we have had no options come through. How many first team minutes has most of the ones you listed actually had? Braithwaite was a purchase as well so was earmarked for the first team squad well in advance. I'm not talking first team quality either , I'm talking plug a gap for a game or two. Maybe they aren't good enough long term but when they are needed, they can do a job.

I remember back in September / October when we had no striker other than rondon who wasn't fit apparantly. That's the point where the reserve players fill a gap. Yet we have no players do that.

That is literally the point of the reserves , a small squad of players ready to deputise when needed. So if we aren't doing that , is it because they aren't good enough or is it just out of choice?
Well you said you were talking about just plugging a gap, so that's why I mentioned those players, because that's what they did.

Firstly, Benitez choosing to pick a player who he signed and has signed before over academy graduates is not necessarily evidence that the academy graduates aren't of the required standard. Dobbin is a wide player anyway, and if he was playing up front he wouldn't be doing the same job as Rondon, so they're not really in direct competition at all.

Secondly, what difference does it make to the overall performance of the academy and/or the under 23 manager if the first team manager picks someone once or twice? It doesn't. It's a nonsensical view. Us picking Kyle John or Ryan Astley for the first team a couple of times in the next few weeks before they drop down the leagues won't change how well the academy is performing, it will just make people on an internet forum change their opinion on how well the academy is performing, which is irrelevant.

Have any of them been seen since?

Honest question, cos I dont pay much attention to their youth.
Not a clue, but I can't ever imagine a team coming out of our academy over the past 5 or 6 years and giving a rival Premier league team managed by a CL winning manager a bloody nose.

It was a remarkable advert for a functioning academy system and a set way of playing at all age groups.
