PARIS -- Charlie Davies is blaming Sochaux for his failure to make the United States' preliminary squad for the World Cup, saying he feels "let down" by his French club.
The striker claims Sochaux president Alexandre Lacombe wrote to the U.S. coaching staff without his knowledge, saying Davies was not fit enough to play at the World Cup and that the club would not medically clear him.
Davies, who was nearly killed in a car accident last October, told French radio station RMC late Wednesday that he was capable of playing in the tournament in South Africa and felt "very hurt, very sad" and "very angry."
"It's frustrating because for the past months I've been training with the (Sochaux) team," Davies said. "I've progressed a lot, I continue to progress, I still have to progress but I'm definitely ready to play."
The 23-year-old Davies, who was omitted from the 30-man roster, said he was stunned when he learned about the letter after speaking with U.S. coach Bob Bradley.
"It's a very strange situation, I feel hurt because I feel like I've been let down by my club," Davies said.
Davies, who insisted he will stay at Sochaux next season because of his good relationship with his teammates, said he spoke with Bradley before the coach released his provisional list.
"Bob Bradley called me the night before the selection was put out to the press," Davies said. "He explained to me that Sochaux sent a letter saying they were not going to clear me medically and wouldn't release me to go with the national team. And that this had a big part to play in not being able to select me."
Davies, who said he hasn't spoken with Lacombe since the car accident, told RMC he was first devastated and "then it turned into anger."
Davies, who is in his first season with Sochaux, sustained severe injuries last October in a car accident in Virginia that killed another passenger. He had a broken left elbow, a broken right femur, tibia and fibula, and a broken nose, forehead and eye socket. He also was left with a ruptured bladder, and bleeding on the brain.
Davies returned to training with Sochaux in March only to hear Lacombe tell a news conference last month that the striker wouldn't recover in time to play this season.
"I'm very angry because I feel FC Sochaux has denied me a chance at playing in the World Cup," Davies said. "Of course I'm not at 100 percent now but I feel that by the time our World Cup camp starts next week I would be at a level where I can compete for one of the forward spots."
U.S. players will gather next week for training camp at Princeton, N.J. The Americans leave for South Africa on May 30, and open the World Cup against England on June 12.
"By the first game against England, I feel I would be able to be at 100 percent and really contribute for the national team," Davies said. "So for me not being able to get a chance is very painful."
Davies hopes he will be cleared to play with his club when he faces a fitness test June 24, and will "train even harder" to make sure he will be ready for next season.
But even without him up front, Davies thinks the Americans can be one of the surprises at the World Cup.
"I definitely think that the U.S. national team has a lot of good players and a lot of potential," he said. "We've beaten Spain in the Confederations Cup. Of course it's not the World Cup but we showed we have quality and that we can win big games. If we play to the best of our potential I think we can go very far."

I love Davies and think next to Donovan he's our most indespencible player on the USMNT. Losing him, I keep getting the vibe that we will not have a good campaign and won't make it out of the group stages despite being in an easy group. I understand that he is disapointed however Sochaux has every right to not medically clear him to play and Charlie is showing the club a shocking lack of respect. Sochaux have treated him well and could have very well had justification to cancel his contract and left him penniless with almost 500K? of hospital bills. It wasn't the club's fault that he was in a car past curfew riding with someone who was intoxicated. Granted no one deserves to see his friend die and suffer a horrific injury but he's going to have to learn that you have to take responsibility for your own actions.

Surely U.S.A have and had the option of having his assessed by their own team? I can never remember another nation taking a clubs word for fitness.

Yeah but I think USA said they were monitering his progress the whole time, but I guess they took Sochaux's word for it. And upon reading the article again it said that Sochaux wouldnt release him to play for USA.

Davies is the only player we have with pace who is good enough to play up front at an international level. He is the 1st player we have ever had who has the ability to link up well with Donovan on the counterattack. His pace also provides Donovan with room to work with in the midfield (if there is a silver lining to this I don't see Donovan having a great WC so we might still be able to afford him in January). He also puts alot of pressure on the back line like AJ did for us and in the attacking 1/3 he has often gets defenses to committ a CB leaving Alitdore single teamed.

How Sochaux got him for 1.25M is beyond me.

He should turn up and ask to train with the squad. That would be the sensible option instead of moaning to the media. Does not work that, it just makes you look like a complainer. (not to be confused with the proclaimers who are specky Scottish songsters)

I agree, mate.

I like 500 miles. :P

He also would have not been ready and would have been at best 75 percent. For that reason I don't think Bradley wanted him on the squad and most likely Bradley and Sochaux are doing him a favor not letting him play so he doesn't reinjure himself. For as bad as the US strike force is you cannot risk throwing a player on the pitch who will most likely be ineffective in the World cup.

I don't think he would have been effective. He hasn't played for months and surely wouldn't have been close to top speed. He'd lack that 1st step to beat defenders. I'm not sure if he'd be capable of lasting 30 min on the pitch, let alone 90+. His injury was alot worse than Yak's and Arteta's and Yak still isn't fully back.

Surely if he's any good he's worth a place on the bench. Even half fit he would be better than some of the others i have seen who've made the squad.

Good point that.

Have you driven on the GW parkway (where the crash was) and is it as dangerous as everyone says it is?

Davies was more upset with the president of Sochaux than say the club... The president, announceed that Davies would not play a game for Sochaux this year when he returned to Frnace still injured.. This was before the president talked to Davies or the Sochaux medical staff..

Sochaux Doctors have the ability to NOT release Davies for the CAMP, they can NOT hold him back from the WC.. Granted Bob B. wont want Davies in the squad without seeing how he plays in the friendlies, but without a doubt Sochaux president, and the Press in France did Charlie wrong on a couple of occasions

Davies plays for the US and therefore is ace, I prefer him to Rooney.

Diefferent class to be fair.. But if Davies comes back the same as before the accident, his name will be known amongst the soccer gods...

I was hopeing he would end up a toffee one day, but my dream was crushed for the time being that fateful day..
