2023/24 Dele

Everybody thought Peter Reid was done. The whole of football seemed unwilling to take a chance on him apart from Everton.

Some gambles pay off, some don't, some have yet to do either.

Nobody knew Dele's deeper reasons for his lack of form and let's be honest, an off form player who doesnt make the Spurs squad, currently gets a starting place in a few positions within our team.

I'm struggling to know though, just how much due diligence would we need to do to find out something about a player that nobody knew about?
I guess the difference is Peter Reid wasn't on £100k a week and joining the club as one of the top 5 earners in the squad, at a time we could ill afford any (more) expensive mistakes.

An embarrassing signing.

Except he was still making the spurs squad. He had made 18 appearances in the half season before we signed him.

Season before he had made 29 appearances.

It’s not like he hasn’t played for a year or something.

Why anyone thinks this lad is going to be a part of our squad in the second half of the season is beyond me. If he plays 7 more games we owe Spurs £10m and even a club as badly run as this is not going to do that for a lad who is out of contract in six months.

Wouldn't surprise me if so-called injuries or setbacks is just typical club speak for a player we all know has no future here and could perhaps be quietly moved on in the January window.

Any interest this lad had in cutting it at the top level as a pro footballer checked out years ago, and we took him because "he was good years ago", which is the exact same reason another club will take him after us, and another after that, as the millions in wages continue to roll in.

If Ravel Morrison can somehow have a dozen years as a pro footballer, Dele shouldn't struggle to live off former glories for as long as he can be bothered - and there will always be a manager somewhere who thinks they'll be the one to restore him.

For me without doubt Everton's worst ever signing.

Players can suddenly be plagued by injuries, it happens.

Hot prospects can fail to settle or just go off the boil.

Sometimes your scouts can just get it wrong.

This guy was clearly finished at Spurs. The whole of football seemed to know apart from Everton.

The complete lack of due diligence is frankly embarrassing.

You're right. Everyone in football knew.
Except the morons we had running the club.
Spectacularly bad signing.

Not just the morons running the club. Read through this thread, the vast majority of the contributors are deluded and despite all evidence to the contrary think he actually has something to offer. Incredible.
When we have Michael Keane starting games I think Dele could offer us something if he ever got fit.

But its a moot point, cos he wont ever be fit to play games for us.

It isn't beyond the realms of possibility to think that if he has kicked his habit and is going to counselling, he can still turn things around and be the player he once promised to be.

I would like to see if he can.
Put simply, this is what every fan should be hoping for because it is the best scenario. The people who have written him off or hold an irrational grudge...

... need to give their heads a serious wobble. The scenarios can probably be split into three: he plays and does well; he plays and doesn't do well; he doesn't play.

We're most probably going to be paying out the same money either way, so let's all hope and pray that the first scenario is the outcome.
