Demarai Gray was in the same bracket as Jude Bellingham at Birmingham. A potential superstar.
The move to Leicester never really worked for him , no idea why, he showed unfulfilled promise there , good in flashes but not quite good enough.
No idea what happened in Germany.
In his short time with us he looks everything we have wanted for ages. Direct, fast , committed, end product , can't fault him.
Brands or Benitez capture ? No idea , can't stand either but congratulations to whoever had the foresight to bring him in.

We were linked with him for a good number of years so possibly Brands

Really they just didn't play him enough. He'd look promising but not quite return enough from it. For me that's exactly when you need to show confidence in a young wide player. They'll all have patchy spells with actual goals and assists but if they're getting into the right areas it usually comes. Sometimes you've got to look at the process and not the results.

I suspect you see a similar story to us with Lookman/Vlasic etc. Its hard to be consistent with young players. Martinez did a lot wrong, but how he managed Barkley, Lukaku, Deulofeu and Stones was good. He really showed faith in them.

I do also think you mature a lot through your 20s, and by your mid 20s you are just ready to kick on. We got Gray at a really good time. I had always liked him and glad hes living up to the promise. He seems to be adding end product to his game too, and is a joy to watch.

He never had the consistency aside from short bursts from the bench at Leicester...in Germany he was excellent to start with (as with us) then dropped off a cliff.

Someone compared him to Kanchelskis, not for me...more like Limpar / Beagrie.

The type of signing I like. Absolute steal for the return so far. More like a Moyes era signing. I.e. Snaffling a player perhaps gone awry careerwise on the cheap and getting them going again (think Pienaar and Arteta). Fingers crossed he can be as consistent and (relatively) long term as those two were.

Now, can we find a couple of bargain full backs?

Correct Zat, as I’ve said, wingers are inconsistent, all apart from the very top level ones, who we can’t afford. Kanchelskis was one of those top level wingers, unfortunately, we couldn’t dream of being able to buy a winger of that level today.

Gray is at the level a little below that, on his day he is terrific, but, like 99% of wingers he is inconsistent. Best thing is to cut him a little slack and remember that he has the ability to win a game in a flash, even when he isn’t playing well.

Don’t think it’s fair to compare his start in Germany to his start here. He’s already played 50% more games for us than he did in his whole German stay, and has scored 5x as many goals.

Gray played over a 100 games for Leicester, so it’s slightly different to lookman & Vlasic.

I wasn’t excited by the signing, yes for the money we couldn’t really go wrong, but the fact Marc Allbrighton was keeping him out the Leicester team was worrying. But fair does to Gray, maybe the penny has dropped with him. And like you say,
A lot of players improve into their 20’s. It would be great if he can get double figure goals and assists.

Or isn’t it a new club bounce. Like lingaard at West Ham? Still think it’s early days and Weren’t the [Poor language removed], so let’s hang fire on the England shouts.
