Discussion & help on depression & mental health related issues

I'm in a fortunate position that I've been offered another job on more money.

My current job that I love has offered me more money to stay, and I absolutely cannot make my mind up on what is best.

I'm terrified that the grass isn't always greener, and I could go somewhere new and absolutely hate the place - or after 6 months they give me the boot and I'm out on my backside after leaving a secure job.

I've been sitting on the decision for three weeks and need to make up my mind... today! My head is up my arse, haven't been able to sleep as I don't know what is the right decision.

ive just had a meeting with my gaffer saying I need more money and will have to look to leave if they cant do anything, took a lot to build up the courage to ask the question so I know how your head is at the minute

does the offer from the current equal or come close to the new job? if so id be inclined to stay personally, but then I did take a leap of faith myself 4 years ago to where I am now and it turns out the grass was indeed greener

I think the important line there from you was "job that you love", especially if they have offered more money to keep you

To put it in perspective.

The role I've been offered is almost 6k a year more basic salary - with a very healthy bonus scheme. If I hit targets I'm given, I can earn 50% of my salary as a bonus.

My fear is I hate it, I don't like the environment and I've left a secure job.

Yes, I do love what I do currently - when I handed in my notice they have come back with an improved offer (an extra 3k a year) - and within the next 12 months it will go up by another 1.5k - they have also added in a bonus scheme (which they don't do currently) but that has to be ironed out and won't come into effect until April.

If I leave and go elsewhere, I'll be £125 a month better off (take home) so only £28 a week really....(excluding any bonuses).

I have lots of great perks at my current job like I said, I get to travel domestically and internationally quite a bit. (Last week I was at an event in Abbey Road studios!)

Free tickets to lots of stuff, and the role is flexible with holiday time, lieu hours etc.

I'm only 27, so plenty of time to move in the future... but I can't help but think it would be a huge opportunity missed...

Is this affecting your mental health or causing you to be depressed, mate?

Sounds a bit like a humble brag to me if I'm being honest.

Yes actually, it's been on my mind for weeks and I can't shake it. I'm fearing making the wrong decision and forever regretting it.

On another note, you've had a chip on your shoulder with regards to other people and their success/financial situations throughout other posts. If you aren't willing to read, listen and give honest advice I suggest you avoid this thread, mate.

If you think he's got a chip on his shoulder take it to a private conversation rather than air your issues in this thread mate, that's not what it's for.

With regards the situation you find yourself in I'd be inclined to stick with the job I loved and one where they've shown they would like you to stay by offering extra money and a bonus scheme. Sounds like that job also offers a fair bit of security and for the actual difference in take home pay is it really worth the risk?

That's the main thing for me at the moment - thanks for all the advice.

I've done the same quite a few times over the years and always stayed where I am at. Depends on the industry of course but my job role is quite dispensable and moving around often isn't great for my mental health so I keep sticking to my current secure (he hopes) job. Good luck whatever you choose! At 27 though you'll get plenty of other chances if you feel like you'd miss out on this one.

On topic though: what can £28 even buy you extra these days.

Thank you,

I've decided I'm going to stay where I am and continue doing what I enjoy - and had a little raise to compensate for it!

£28 a week (after tax) doesn't seem much, over the course of a year it's almost a grand and a half though! - when you look at it like that, it could have been Christmas, birthdays etc all sorted.. (or a holiday!)

Money is awful for mental health, the amount of people who worry daily because of it is terrible.
