Before this tournament I would have defended him to an extent, but he should have gone. It's like Cloughie's sad final season with Forest, or Kendall coming back for the final time. Detracts from what good there has been.

Underperforming or not Southgate has put together a level of consistency in progressing in tournaments not seen in a very long time. I think that legitimately does get lost.

I agree to an extent, he deserves credit for being effective. I do think though that as soon as England come up against a good team they falter.
