The failure to qualify for 2008 was an all time stinker and probably the worst failure of any England manager ever.

However, again, judging McClaren and Southgate on their club careers then we can see who the better actual manager is in that instance too. You might be surprised.
Oh Wally Brolly Schteve was definitely the better club manager for sure

Again, I’d like to see what Sven would’ve achieved if he was given the tournament draws that Southgate has been given. Alas we’ll never know. If the next manager ever gets similar luck of the draw then that’ll be a good yardstick.
The 5 tournaments before Southgate included not qualifying ahead of Russia, finishing behind Costa Rica and the US in groups and losing to Iceland.

Y’all have forgotten where you come from.

I don’t care about previous tournaments. We have generational players at our disposal right now.

As stated previously, his managerial record will speak for itself. The man does not have a clue.

Won a League Cup and got to a European final. Then Southgate came in and burnt all his good work down to the ground in 3 years. Have to be a special level of incompetent to achieve that.

His record is quite good. I mean it is very hard to attack his results. He’s gone deep in every tournament and his defeats are all to good sides with at least two and possibly all three being matches you can say with a break or two they win.

Lose today and a lot of that shifts clearly.

Oh and you had generational players then. The 2010 team for example needed a good manager to put the pieces together in a way that fit, but Rooney, Lampard, Terry, Ashley Cole and whoever else were all at the very top of the game. Your history is underachieving, Southgate isn’t and it isn’t enough.

Complete waffle, we also had Aaron Lennon, Matthew Upson, David James and Emile Heskey starting at the 2010 World Cup. We still underperformed at that tournament no doubt, nobody would argue otherwise. Then we had another idiot in Hodgson wasting the next three tournaments despite the fact our squad was even weaker and the golden generation was at the very end of its cycle.

Southgate is underachieving/achieving the absolute bare minimum if you even do the slightest bit of deep diving for some context rather than just simply look at a set of tournament finishes as numbers on Wikipedia. But clearly you aren’t interested in doing that so it’s a pointless discussion.

Would you take him as the next US manager?

I would take him over GGG yes, I don’t really think there is much to argue there.

I don’t think he’d be the best choice, but a lot of that is down to the fact that I think his best attribute is he gets the team together in a way that I don’t think works the same when it isn’t an Englishmen leading English players. I’m not saying he’s the greatest tactician ever, however international football is much less about tactics than the club game. He’s adequate and that’s really enough sometimes.

Again if Southgate is underachieving than he’d have to be winning tournaments to hit the level required and you’re forgetting that England don’t do that.

Well at the last euros we had a home tournament and the easiest draw possible including the final against a poor, ageing Italy side that didn’t even qualify for the 2022 World Cup. So yes, I’d say he should’ve won that tournament and it’s a failure that he didn’t. And it was directly because of his tactics that we didn’t put that Italy side to the sword in the final. See also: Croatia 2018. We should’ve got to the final because we were 1-0 up and outplaying them completely before he stepped in with his half time team talk. To get to that point, we’d beaten a load of weak teams that we were expected to beat anyway. So yeah, with context, we underachieved in both of those tournaments.

“We didn’t win the game we lost so we underachieved” is certainly one way to ensure that it is always the case.

I disagree on that. Croatia had already taken control well before HT
