Answer should be yes and no

The business he did do he done very well

Its the business he didn't do that's the major issue

Indeed, but take Oumar Niasse for example - sitting there on massive wages, content not to leave, the legacy of failure before Brands arrives. That's a very hard barrier to overcome when trying to reshape the squad.

Ideally, Tosun and Niasse wouldn't be here and someone like Haller would be, but if those players refuse to move then they have contracts - there's not much we can do.

....he did fine getting rid of much of the deadwood, but my initial feeling is the signings aren’t as good as last summers intake.

Iwobi looks very decent, Kean is a disappointment, Delph might be an ok addition, Sidebe was poor on his only appearance. A lot rests on Gbamin.

Surely a bit too early to Judge Kean as a disappointment, Aguero would struggle to score with the service you get here. He's 19 playing against packed defences, hardly any space and still made our best chance and gave their goalkeeper the only meaningful save he had to make all afternoon.

Not when he is not responsible for picking Schneiderlin and not responsible on what tactics to deploy that suit our players. He is not even responsible for picking Silva in the first place ffs.

If there’s any fault, I suggest blaming him for sticking with Silva.
It could be said he's responsible for not shifting him out.

If he had left we would be left with

Delph
Davies
Baningime
Gomes (injured)
Gbamin (injured)

The real horror was not signing another Gbamin type...theres no muscle in the centre.

...I hadn’t heard of him but that worries me less. With Kean disappointing to this stage, i’m inclined to think a lot now rests on Gbamin making a huge difference. Saying that, it’s not long until January when we can address the central defensive problem.

I wonder if we’re also in the market for an alternative to Gomes.

Ive obviously made my feelings clear that Id like our priority (after a centre back) to be a monster CM player to line up alongside Gbamin.

Would you prefer that type of player or a Gomes alternative if you could only choose one...?

How do you shift out a player who doesn't want to go? He's under contract.

If Schneiderlin is happy to sit and risk not playing while earning £100k a week or whatever he's on, then that's not Brands fault given he had nothing to do with the player being here.
Stop being simplistic. It was Silva that is dumb enough to keep him and view him as integral part of the squad. Quotes everywhere if you bother to find.
He tried but Schneiderlin refused a move back to France, was it Nantes ? Which is the players right and not the DOF's fault really. A lot of deadwood was shifted, but I will admit a centre half with pace should have been brought in.

Schneiderlin didnt want to go back to France as the salary was too low. He was offered Turkey for a very low fee but his wages would be covered.

That was delayed by Silva because we didnt have a replacement.

Last season we had Gana / Gomes as the main two...this season its Gbamin / Gomes. Like for like in terms of bodies and Delph signed for the squad.

But if Schneiderlin left we would need another, i think he would have gone if we had landed Doucoure.

Signings were great, it is mostly (at least %75-80) on Marco, we should stop finding a scapegoat all the time

Spot on Zat, though I would give Tom Davies a go in place of Schneiderlin, far more movement and aggression.

...we really lack creativity without Gomes, so I would be concerned if your ‘monster’ doesn’t have the ability to pick a pass. We are reliant on width and also getting our wingers in goal scoring positions, but Sheffield United comfortably negated that yesterday. Nobody had the ability to unlock their defence or produce a moment of individual magic.

One of the reasons I was surprised when he took off Bernard, don't get me wrong he was as poor as the rest yesterday, but at least he looked as if he could create something. Sigurdsson needs dropping and something else tried in his place.

I think what we lack are two players / monsters in the middle who can outfight teams.

Petit and Vieira were very athletic and could get up and down the pitch and dominate smaller midfielders.

Gbamin looks to be a decent passer, his long passes have been slightly too far ahead of our wide players but thats probably due to him not having trained with them much.

A doucoure who could bring the ball forward and drive the team on would have been ideal. Likewise we needed Sangare to sit alongside or rotate with Gbamin.

Instead weve got 1 of 3 when we needed 2 or 3 of them + that player is now injured.

Gomes can be a good player but hes so inconsistent. When hes good hes very good (like sigurdsson) but when hes not good hes dreadful.

In this rebuilding phase id have played a little safer and gone for power over finesse.

...don’t disagree, i’ve been calling for that athleticism and power in central midfield for an age. We do need some proper quality to turn defeats into draws and draws into wins, perhaps in Sigurdsson’s position.
