Literally in the first couple of minutes he missed 2 good chances. The first, which he created himself with some very good work, was a wild swing with his left foot but he was a touch off balance when he took it. The second, and better chance, came when a Cook clearance put him through one on one with their keeper (who had an excellent game by the way). He tried to dink it over him and he forced the keeper into an excellent save. They were the sort of misses that would have pleased the doubters on here as they justify their criticism of the lad, and in fairness he does need to start scoring at least 1 in 2 of these good opportunities if he's going to become a top striker.

He didn't have any decent opportunities after that, although he led the line well and always looked a threat with his pace. He really seems to have speeded up a notch since last season. In fairness, it wasn't a good performance by England. How Sessegnon stayed on the full 90 I have no idea. He was worse than poor. Although he looked bright at times things didn't really come off for James Maddison, who I thought was guilty of looking for his team mate Demarai Grey too much. I don't think he linked up more than once with DCL, which was pitiful for a number 10 and a striker, but he linked up at least a dozen times with Grey. The service from midfield was poor too. Onomah, who I normally like, got caught in possession countless times and Lewis Cook was also well below par. In fact, the Dutch absolutely controlled midfield until Davies came on for Onomah on the hour.

I've not been overly impressed with Davies for the U21s but he did well last night. He mainly played it simple and helped Cook wrest control back from the Dutch. One exquisite volleyed cushion pass to I think Solanke was the highlight of the game, along with a long range effort from Grey that rattled the bar.

With 15 to go, Solanke and Abraham came on. Not sure Abraham even touched it, but Solanke had 2 decent opportunities to win it for England as the game opened up a bit due to the Dutch needing to win the game. It's good to know that it's not just DCL that fluffs his lines;)

This lad has all the attributes to become a top striker, we should support him all the way....

DCL scored 8 goals 7 assists last season, this season I expect even better 10+ goals & 8 assists would be a good improvement...

Cenk is drawing blanks atm so DCL is pushing for the strikers role with 3 goals in two games that is clearly the case...

Time will tell indeed....but if his attitude stays positive & he continues to make improvement season after season we will have a 20 goal a season international striker...

He played - and scored - regularly for all the England junior sides, and scored 9 goals when on loan in the Championship at 18. Obviously not everybody was saying he was going to go on and be one of the very best in the world, but Spurs had high hopes that he was going to be a first team player for them, and Norwich saw enough in him to want to loan him to play in the Premier League when he was only 19.

Predicting how good players will be is obviously very difficult, but when you've seen them 50 odd times like we have with DCL you have a decent idea of their ability levels. He's certainly a PL player already, it's just a question of whether he'll be a top end one or an average one.

Not arguing with what your saying mate. But even so I would still say that Kane has improved well beyond anybody's expectations.

Four years ago when Kane had just had his 21st birthday, he was just breaking into the Spurs first team. If you would have said then that he would go on to score 107 goals in his next 143 premier league games, winning the golden boot twice in the process, score 19 goals in 30 full Internationals and go on to win the golden boot at the next world cup, people would have said you were mad. Even the most bias Spurs fan wouldn't have expected that.

No that's pretty much what I just said. It would have been very difficult to say he was going to be this good, but the post I was replying to said nobody rated him when he was this age, which is clearly just not true.

The situation with Kane as a junior would probably be most like that of Dowell now. If he turned out to be top drawer you couldn't say it was a shock because he's been talked about as a standout talent for years and has already done well in the Championship, but likewise if he ends up as a permanent Championship player it wouldn't be a shock either, because there are some question marks over him.

I think with DCL it's clear that he has enough to his game to at least carve out a PL career in the mould of a Shane Long/Callum Wilson/Sam Vokes even without getting any better, it's just a question of whether he can improve enough to become more than that, and an asset to a team in the upper reaches of the league.

In my opinion he won't be a top class striker and I don't believe his finishing points to 20 goals a season but you are right he is pushing cenk,but for me that is a position that needed to added to in the summer.
 
Think he's gotten better in the air, his goal against Huddersfield was quite nice. I just can't peg him as "world class in the making". He does 2 things great then falls on his face next 5.

Can admit, freely, he is loads better than at the beginning of last year. Not exactly saying much with that tho.
 

What style CF is DCL attempting to become?
- the type to get in behind with pace?
- a target man useful in hold up play?
- the type that creates chances for others?
- a dribbler that can create space for himself?

If you only have one style of play I imagine you develop faster as you’re only focused on a specific skill set and strategy.

Becoming a complete forward takes time; as a fan base, let’s have patience with the lad and enjoy his development.

That was Bothroyd’s selection criteria in a nutshell, players selected must have had recent 1st team game time . As a result of his tactics, England were pretty boring in terms of finished product yet managed to have some exciting players on show. It looked like they started with 3 at back, two wing backs , but changed it after a while. DCL did well I thought, great pace and strength , speedy on the wing got his cross into a dangerous area, and speedynthrough the centre, a good outlet for holding up/flicking on the the long clearance from the back .

I know they tend to play the way the seniors play but I'd have thought the Toulon tournament would have made them realise 3 at the back sucks for this group.

They changed it after about 35 mins. Neither the defenders or the wing backs were comfortable with it so it was never going to work out. The fact that Boothroyd started the game with 2 CDs and 2 FBs on the pitch tells me that switching to a back 4 was always going to be an option, in which case it was just a half hearted attempt at a back 3 anyway. Bit of a joke really.

Still can't understand why Holgate wasn't in the squad. He has twice the number of senior games at premier level than Fry has in the championship and Konsa had only ever played in League 1 until this season.
