2018/19 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The trouble is That finishing isn’t bad, it’s absolutely shocking. He has no power in his shots and can’t score from outside the area , he has no composure in or around the box , he doesn’t get the ball heading for the corners and is indecisive when presented with any clear sight of goal. The only thing he seems to be able to not be gash at is getting his head on the ball. His shots are either the wrong option and he should have passed , weak , not usually hit cleanly , off target or right at the gk. He has literally no aspect of finishing that he isn’t hash at with his feet, he’s just not very good actually kicking a football and imo that’s a pretty big part of being a footballer

And yet here he is playing in the premier league and for his age group at international level but sod what his coaches think, Tel from merseyside thinks he's gash and will 100% not improve.

Calvert-Lewin, like Tom Davies, will usually peak about this time in the summer , just before pre-season comes around. They will be terrible, but this will be understandably "concentrating on getting their fitness up".

I still think the goals will come

With some strikers it just "clicks", and I think it will for him too

He's doing everything he needs to do other than putting the ball in the net. Once he does that a couple of times next season the goals will flow I think

I see two camps in here, we have the posters who agree he needs to score more but can appreciate the attributes he does have and given his age these posters are willing to see how he progresses next season before writing him off.

Then we have the posters who are absolutely adamant he is league 1 standard and think we should be buying Aguero type strikers despite us not even in europe and despite us not having an elite level striker since Lineker(Lukaku maybe)

All the more reason to get a "striker" than wait for DCL. We need some one scoring goals now to get up there and into Europe.

We do we really do but doesn't mean there isn't a place in the squad for DCL, seriously a bit of patience with this kid could potentially save us a fortune in the transfer market but of course we need a striker, just about everyone agrees.

last year I said he needed to have a decent run in the team, rather than play a couple of games and then get dropped, which is what happened in the first half of the season. He got that run and proved that he can play a role in the team that went on that run over the last 3 months. Ok he could and should have scored a few more goals but he played with greater confidence and contributed to the attacking style we played then. This coming season he needs to improve by scoring goals,he deserves the chance to do that. Yes we also need another goal scoring forward as competition or playing in the front 3. It’s up to him to grab the chance and take it.

Did we lack goals as a team last season or something?
Well all the teams above us with the exception of the magnificent Wolves scored more than us.
So if we want to break into the top 4/6 we need to score more goals
We drew 9 games last season and lost 7 by the odd goal.
Thats 25 points extra we could have got from scoring 16 more goals in critical situations
Even turning 5 of those draws into wins and 3 of the defeats into draws would have got us 13 more points from 8 goals
Fanciful I know
So yes we were short of goals

Couple of things , I’m not from merseyside and I didn’t say he won’t improve as he has improved since he first came into the team . I’m saying he will never be a good finisher and never score enough goals for a team playing at a level that is where we want to be

Obviously in an ideal world he's also 20 a season, but as long as the goals come does it matter who scores them? I think that front role in Silva's system is as much about bringing the others into the game. If DCL doesn't score many goals but he's flicking on the ball for Richarlison, Bernard or Gylfi to do so then he's worth his place.

I would sell Tosun and use the funds to get Rondon. Apparently available for 'just' 15m due to a clause in his contract. Rondon is proven at this level and DCL can interchange and learn from him. In a couple of years when Rondon's on the way out DCL either takes the role or moves on.
