he does have potential, he works hard, his athleticism is off the charts, he positions well, but he needs to improve on his composure. he's missing sitters.
Hes missing the same amount as his peers.

And hes way past the potential stage.

Neither of those players is a “ready made replacement” whatsoever, and one of them will never play another (competitive) match for us.

I mean stylistically no, they are obviously not. However they are both very good strikers in their own right. Lets not try and make a comparison to where we were in 2017 when Lukaku left, and we had Kone and Niasse on the books to come in.

As for Kean, we've no idea how it plays out. If DCL went I'd imagine he would go in as our number 9 if nobody wants to pay the fee we wanted.

And hes way past the potential stage.

I think I said the other day, his strength isn't even his finishing, it's that he is able to generate a lot more chances for himself than most on that list, as he's bigger, stronger, taller and faster than most of the others.

From a numbers perspective the best comparison I could draw would be Salah, who would miss opportunities but also would get an insane amount of chances, (in his case being a unique player perfectly fitted to quite a unique system).

After half time, did any of you think during the remainder of the game that he was going to score? I didn’t last night.
Just thinking he’s struggling from a lack of creativity from midfield/wide and balls into the box when we are facing teams from lower down the league.

I was serious when I said in pre-season that I didn't believe he'd ever score 15 league goals, but he's almost certainly going to go comfortably beyond that. He's also become a genuinely good player in terms of his overall game, rather than simply being a battering ram against centre-backs that are terrified of a bit of physicality.

It's now just a case of finding the right alternative to come in and compete with him. There weren't loads of players going last summer who I really thought that Everton should have moved for, but Rodrigo on a free was one. It'd make a big difference having someone who can do things like make space with a drop of the shoulder, beat a man from a standing start and have a dig from long range.

The development of Calvert Lewin has been insane really. I was always quite a big backer, but I didn't see his latest development. You kind of had 2 big jumps in his career, the first was after working with Duncan where he became a very good target man. He would win lots of headers, go to war, run channels, occupy defenders etc. Oddly enough, very much in the mould of a young Ferguson (probably quicker, but not as good technically). In honesty, I was happy with that. Had he shown that, I'd have been saying we probably have another 18 months from him and ideally look to upgrade once we get to the CL.

The next big jump though has been under Ancelotti. Like with a lot of players he has focussed him and optimised what he does, where he stands, the runs he makes etc. He still probably offers as much to the team without the ball (albeit in a more structured, less chaotic way) but he is now more Inzaghi than Ferguson. But Inzhagi who is probably 3 inches taller, with a much better leap and quicker.

I actually think now, at a top team he would score buckets of goals. Not neccesarily as he's the greatest finisher, but if the ball was in and around the opponents box a lot, his power, size, jump and positioning will mean just by statistics he will get so many chances. It might sound crazy, but I could honestly see him at a club like Bayern absolutely tearing up the Bundesliga and scoring an insane amount of goals. Defenders just wouldn't be able to handle him.

Probably his best non goal scoring performance for a while that. His running with the ball has come on leaps and bounds

I don't get that. He's a striker. They're supposed to score goals. In his first 11 games this season he scored 11. In his next 11 games he's scored 2. How is that "improving" in any sense of the word?

People going a bit OTT again here, he was alrite but with the ball at his feet he still needs massive work.

He's absolutely quality in the air and holding it up, he bullied that CB who got dragged off, he won some free kicks running outside as well.

But you think of the gomes pass he should have controlled better, there was one dead early on when someone played him in and he sort of just ran into the keeper ( similar to the Richy goal but more central ) there was the one he got the ball and turned into trouble instead of putting it out wide to doucoure ( he got a free kick like but was a bit lucky )

He has improved massively from the last season's but not wrong to say he still needs massive work with the ball at his feet.

He's a younger Lewandowski at the moment, and that's precisely what he did.

It's hard to think of that many more complete strikers in the game at the moment than him.

Yeah, the biggest surprise for me has been the improvement in terms of finesse. He was always a handful on his day, but now he's taking the ball in his stride while running at pace, and he seems to have a plan whenever he's bringing it down under pressure.

I know what you mean about him fitting the profile of a Bayern striker. It's difficult to know what his scoring record would be like outside of the Premier League, where hardly anyone hits more than 20 on a regular basis, but he does have the look of a Toni / Gomez at times. Lately, I've been thinking that he reminds me of Dzeko, too.

Sometimes a player comes along that is just too quick, strong etc for European defenders as well as having decent enough technique which he does. I think particularly in Germany he would be very hard to handle.

It’s not until you watch other strikers in the league you appreciate how good he is and how good Lukaku was. There’s genuinely very few strikers you’d rather have in the league than him, I can think of Kane this season? Might be more but I can’t think of any others? He helps us massively when we defend deeper, hopefully ‘when’ or ‘if’ we manage a fully strength team for once, we manage to play a bit more attacking like the first few games but whose arsed if we win.
