2024/25 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

I think both are true….1. We don’t create enough chances and 2. DCLs is not a prolific goal scorer….prolific goal scorers probably convert chances at what, say a 1 in 2 or 3 ratio? I think his is probably more like a 1 in 10? For a team that creates little he ain’t scoring many.

It reminded me of back in the 90s when there was a public clamour to get Andy Cole into the first 11 for England even though Shearer was in his pomp. Hoddle used to say the same thing….Cole needed a lot of chances to convert 1 and in international football not that man6 chances were created.

This post is in no way intending to compare DCL with Andy Cole!
Cheryl Cole?

It's not just his finishing.
- He's easily manhandled, shoved, bumped etc by others. Sure he wins the odd free kick (struggling to remember one in the box) but often that's better for the opposition.
- His runs off the ball in and around the box, at times, defy belief, other times they seem cowardly. His runs off the ball seem to improve the further he is away from goal. Since Carlo, once in a blue he comes out and proves this wrong.
- He lacks presence - something thats desperately needed

It's funny, I was looking at all other strikers we have had, some of them we have spent huge money on (far more than DCL) and their comparative records.

DCL 56 in 231
Tosun 9 in 50
Beto 4 in 40
Chermiti 0 in 18
Rondon 1 in 27
Ramirez 1 in 16
Walcott 10 in 77
Gordon 7 in 65
Gray 9 in 67
Kean 2 in 32
Broja 0 in 4.

If you looked at that list, the main conclusion is we don't create many chances for our strikers. The second conclusion would be that DCL is by no stretch the worst offender, and quite the opposite really.

He basically has way more goals than the rest of them combined in just over half the games. And they cost way over 100 combined as well, and have contributed 43 goals to DCLs 56. Like I'm doubtful we find the next Alan Shearer when he goes.

Some of those aren’t strikers, and you missed Maupay - but the main conclusion from that list is we sign absolutely terrible footballers.
