2024/25 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

It's funny, I was looking at all other strikers we have had, some of them we have spent huge money on (far more than DCL) and their comparative records.

DCL 56 in 231
Tosun 9 in 50
Beto 4 in 40
Chermiti 0 in 18
Rondon 1 in 27
Ramirez 1 in 16
Walcott 10 in 77
Gordon 7 in 65
Gray 9 in 67
Kean 2 in 32
Broja 0 in 4.

If you looked at that list, the main conclusion is we don't create many chances for our strikers. The second conclusion would be that DCL is by no stretch the worst offender, and quite the opposite really.

He basically has way more goals than the rest of them combined in just over half the games. And they cost way over 100 combined as well, and have contributed 43 goals to DCLs 56. Like I'm doubtful we find the next Alan Shearer when he goes.
Do it by goals per minutes now Catcher. It's not impressive at all.

And people just accept it these days Dave.

It's shameful what we've come to accept.

I have to laugh at the times in the past he's got a titty lip on when fans have had a go at his chronic lack of goal scoring; like we should be delighted he's bothering to run about.

The best service he can offer this club is to get himself sold next month and let us reinvest that cash on a replacement.

Very honestly, anytime I see someone do a "x goals in x appearances" I immediately think they must be purposely trying to hide something. Acting as if a 2 minute sub appearance is somehow the same as a 90 minute start is insane. It is SO easy these days to pull up the exact number of minutes played, that the only genuine reason I can think for this misleading(the kind word) stat pulls is manipulation of the data because otherwise it doesnt support their argument. If either Chermiti or Broja score 1(seeing neither has had more than 150 minutes on the pitch) they instantly become more prolific than DCL.

If you want to have a real discussion on it, use the real stats.

Beto in the PL the past 2 years: Goal every 384 minutes
DCL in the PL the past 2 years: Goal every 390 minutes
Cenk Tosun: Goal every 264 minutes
Theo Walcott: Goal every 450 minutes
Richarlison: Goal every 259 minutes

If you want to take a list of terrible players and say "look, hes better than some of those" I guess you can, but wont do you any favors. Being worse than Beto and Tosun is a hard argue. You are correct in that DCL is indeed better than Rondon and Sandro, so thats a plus.

Pretty obvious from his performances and comments made by him and his family over the last few years he feels he's been hard done by here. All probably stems back to that run of form under Ancelotti and his goal for England. Think he and the people around him really expected it to only get better from there and it hasn't worked out like that.

But it begs the question where to next for the lad. Would he start regularly teams in the top half? Probably not. Would he be happy to sit on the bench? Maybe. Will they pay the wages he's looking for? Probably not. The answers to those questions suggest his options are limited.
The lad has been so, so lucky here.

Anywhere else he would be back at Sheffield Utd and the Championship.

You can argue about the lack of chances all day, but a good striker would score more of the (admittedly few) we do we create for him than he does. He seems to be unable to hit a ball with any force and has an unerring ability to hit it straight at the keeper. Plus, the rest of his play - holding the ball up, bringing the midfielders into play, winning headers (not headers that he blindly heads on to no one in particular, but ones that he wins and directs to a team mate) and any kind of close control are, contrary to what some would have us believe, virtually non-existant.

Remember how we felt when we were spending money on Arouna Koné?

That's how teams will feel when they're linked to Dom.

Dislike him that much I would rather have Maupay! 😂🤣

If Maupay had managed only two goals halfway through the year do you think we would be subjected to reading about how he's starved of service and it's all the manager's fault?

Somehow I know that wouldn't be the case.
