Exactly this mate. I’ve read that he’s being singled out, scapegoated, that he gets ‘vile abuse’. That people expect him to score 20 goals..

All absolute nonsense. Some of us just think Tosun and Niasse are better options and he offers absolutely nothing out wide.

Anyone who is in the Everton side will have their performances debated on an Everton forum.

Thing is Macca, absolutely nobody comes into this thread and just gives a reasoned response saying they'd prefer Tosun/Niasse to start. They literally just scream about how they think DCL isn't good enough, which is far from the truth.

I rate the lad and it's his first proper season and he's done well. He would benefit from playing up top alongside another striker, perhaps him and Tosun.
 
He’s been playing better than we expected before the start of the season, but he’s still not good enough to be our main striker. Would love for us to loan him out to a weak PL outfit next season where he would be their main man for the whole season.

As I’ve said, he’s performed as well as could be expected. That doesnt mean he’s performed anywhere near well enough. People always complain when we sign players who the top 6 wouldn’t consider. He’d not be in the squad for those sides, yet he starts quite often for Everton. Why is that acceptable?

It’s not slating the lad. It’s saying that he’s less productive than a crap Niasse. So maybe he needs time to develop away from Everton.

You're not looking very hard mate. I've gone back 2 pages and found all these posts which effectively say what you're claiming 'absolutely nobody' has said.

On one hand, for a young lad who we've asked a lot of he hasn't been too bad, has weighed in with some goals and some assists, and works hard for the team.

On the other, I think there's sometimes a tendency for some on here to talk about him as if he's an 18 year old local kid plucked out of the reserves because of an injury crisis, or a centre half that we're asking to play up front and be a nuisance. He's not though. He's being picked ahead of more senior players, and is on Premier League wages, so he should be judged the same as any other player in the team. I'm sure he'll improve as he gets older and more experienced, but in my opinion he hasn't contributed enough.

That being said, while he hasn't set the prem alight this year, his play has improved immeasurably and he's still very young. Unfortunately, the fact that we didn't recruit anything like a suitable replacement for Lukaku has forced him to be used WAY more that he should have been. He's done well IMO all things considered and has grown with real world experience. He always seems to give 100% and that is more than can be said for most in the side. Hopefully we'll get a real striker in the summer that he can learn from and also shoulder the burden with.

Who said it's acceptable he was starting? It was the club's fault not his. He only cost us £1.5m.

He doesn't have 8 goals in 25 games. He has 4 in 25 in the league, and 8 in 37 in all competitions. 3 of those 8 were against awful opposition in Sunderland and Ruzomberok, and 2 more of them were pointless consolations (Chelsea at 2-0 down in the Cup in the last minute, and Arsenal when we were 4-0 down).

I think he's a promising young player who has some decent attributes and clearly managers seem to like him. His attitude must be excellent as well and I think he's a good squad player to have. I actually think people have been on harsh on him with his first half performance last week (out of position as well) as he linked up well with Tosun and helped out in a few dangerous moments.

His scoring record is poor though. He doesn't score in big moments and I can think of numerous occasions when he has wasted easy opportunities at crucial moments for us. Hull away last season he put a header wide in the final minute from about 5 yards out, and he should have got us the winner against Limassol at home where he missed another header. He needs to improve in this regard if he's going to play for us long term or for a top 10 side in the Premier League.
