Donald Trump for President Thread

It's a very popular world view in parts of America, shared by people from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Do the masses not deserve a leader who reflects their views? By the people, for the people?

That's why it's important to recognize that Trump isn't simply a nutter, he represents a strong base of nutters in 'Murica. Nutty is as nutty does

Ffs where is my teddy bear and soccer ball?

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin didn’t get the reaction she wanted during her speech promoting Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy to the Milwaukee County Republican Party on Friday night.

“What the heck are you thinking, candidates? What the heck are you thinking when you’re actually asking for more immigrants — even illegal immigrants, welcoming them in,” Palin said of Trump’s opponents. “Even inducing and seducing them with gift baskets: ‘Come on over the border and here’s a gift basket of teddy bears and soccer balls.”

Do mean it like people who arent part of establishment cant run for a president in the future like

No, finners. I think this thing even got away from Trump, and whoever wins is going to hit that iceberg. What part of what establishment do you think Trump isn't part of? The Clintons went to Ivanka's wedding for a reason. This whole thing is dirty, IMHO.

We won't know the truth of this whole affair until after I'm long gone. Don't miss that convention in Cleveland, though. We'll see history. Lots of street theatre to boot. (Dang, look at RM score again...)

Likely to be a real life civics lesson in the importance of delegates...

I have never voted in my life, I have never seen a candidate worry of my vote. I feel cheated by democracy as it doesn't take account of those of us who choose not to vote for any of the candidates on the ballot paper. Political parties don't need to put forward a person who will capture the imagination of the electorate, they just need to put forward someone who is marginally better than the other parties are putting up. Democracy isn't democracy until it takes account of the people who don't vote.
The presidential race will be a choice between Clinton and Trump, most Americans wouldn't choose to choose between these two for President.
Like most political competitions it is a choice between the least worst. I believe that if less people choose not to vote than do vote for the winning candidate then the election should be declared null and void and the parties should be made to put up better candidates, ones people want to vote for.

An interesting feature of American political conventions is the little known fact that many of the operating rules of the convention are determined just before it convenes. This is as true of the Democrats as it is of the Republicans, if not more so. Many ostensible Trump delegates will be assigned by the respective state parties and may or may not be actual supporters of the candidate they are committed to vote for on the first ballot. Many rules binding delegates to candidates are determined on a state by state basis. A regular feature of the conventions are huge fights over the rules of the convention before the actual business gets conducted.

I predict you'll get some entertainment to go with your breakfast in the UK. Late, late nights.

It'll be a civics lesson like we got back in the day with Watergate and such. Watch the sausage get made, in high definition. And on social media.

With video.

Hello from Wisconsin.

This is hell.

I am in hell.

That is all.

I agree with the sentiment here, but in reality not voting just rewards those in power. They won't give a damn that voter turnout was low. But a no confidence option would be great, if it actually meant something.

I'm increasingly convinced that we need a grand scale overhaul not of the government itself, but of our political system and how we elect people.

It's from a different era and was designed specifically for a world without political parties FFS.

We could try going back to actual constitutional government as envisioned by the founders, for example.

In any case, the status quo will not hold. Plus, there are so many interesting potential events in the rest of the world. It feels like the late 70's again, lad.

Plus, Wisconsin is the nicest hell in the world. With beer, cheese, and sausages. I could just kill a butter burger about now.

I emigrated here 8 years ago and never got my sakkar ball or gift basket. Where do I sign for these great incentives?

Shocking. Ah, if only Curley were still mayor...

That boat has long since sailed, and anyway it was something that could only have worked in that time and in that place.

The lesson we should have all learned in the West is that it is who we elect that matters, not the system that they claim up uphold. The crisis in Western democracy has come about solely because we have spent much of that the past forty years electing charlatans, incompetents, the corrupt and the malign to rule us. We desperately need to stop doing this - hopefully we will get a chance to do so in 2020, and hopefully you lot will in 2016.

Aye, Nate Silver did a good article on some of the delegate challenges likely to affect Trump in particular
http://fivethirtyeight.com/features...-bust-for-donald-trump-at-the-gop-convention/

Think the democratic convention might be a bit messier than the last couple since Sanders doesn't really seem to have the same desire to be mollified by a possible cabinet position so am expecting some skirmishes.

But doubt it will be anything close to what will likey be a no holds barred fight in Cleveland.
