This signing probably indicates Lampard is thinking of a midfield three. There’s just no way in the world VdB can play in a two especially as we don’t have a defensive mid.

He’s a link player who likes to get on the end of stuff in the box. I’m hoping we don’t do what we did with Klaasen and try and play him as a deep lying midfield dictator.

This hopefully helps solve how the ball gets to the strikers now, but still issues for me on how we move it through midfield. The centrebacks can’t pass and there’s not a deep lying midfielder who can create.

Complete overhaul fella of the midfield. I'd personally like to see gray have a floating license around Richy and DCL instead of constantly on the wing. That's the problem... Which means we'd need a 3 man DCM to mop up. It's a nightmare mate square pegs in round holes ATM.. so play a virtual 433..

The Athletic article also mentions that Frank wants to play 3 in midfield (could be 2 sitting and one as a #10 or a flatter 3) but that he wants one of his mids to pick up pockets of space to create opportunities.

Think he'll be a good signing, hope we've thrown a cheeky agreed fee in there however that's unlikely given that United and currently crapping their pants about selling anyone, even Lingard, lest it bite them in the bum. Almost as weird a club as us.
