Duncan Ferguson - The Coach

I'm enjoying the Everton boys showing some fight D-Man, but the style ain't great overall – even though we did have some really nice passages of play yesterday.

Will it work past this week? Well, who knows. That's why I'm reluctant to say jump in and try it out full-time. If the man himself admits that he shouldn't really have the job, why should we try and force it upon him? His opposite number yesterday has gone through all that.
He's a con man mate. He's wanting that job FT, no question.

He;s a cone layer and needs to get back to it.

In charge for Leicester which is the smart thing to do. Or the only thing we can actually do. Whatever, just make them run through brick walls and get the win.

If you ignore the top teams, and especially Guerdiola's teams, there are very few teams that are able to play ball-oriented and at the same time be effective. Most often it is tiki-taka without direction. It's definitely dinosaur football. It's not very entertaining either.

I'm not saying that DF is a genius, but if you don't master the basics, you have no chance of developing as a team. Right now, we have to master the basics, and with that one gets very far.

Klopp's philosophy is not very complicated, but it is very effective when everyone is doing their job. At the start of his period Liverpool had many long passes, aiming to win the ball high in the field and avoid being caught in imbalance. You can still see this in the big matches. Eventually, the opponents focused on closing this space and went deeper. This gives Liverpool more ball possession, and they push much more overall further up the field.

When over half of the PL teams want to play modern (misunderstood) tiki taka football, they are absorbed by Liverpool's pressure. For opportunities lie in the space behind the backfour, but then you have to play the ball forward and you have to move into that space. Not just one, but several, and preferably opposite movements. Klopp's system is perfect for teams that want to play out at all costs, backward and sideway passes, and who don't seek breakthroughs.
He has one strategy: run until you drop; back to front ASAP.

It's basic and will fail badly over time.

He's done a good job getting through these games but as you say we can not carry on with this long term.

Fans genuinely wanting a bloke who in his own words doesn't want it due to inexperience terrifies me.

Its like the idiots who wanted Unsworth to have it because the under 23's won their league.

Thankfully Brands as DOF means we wont be appointing Dunc or someone like Moyes imo.

I’ll be interested to see how he sets up at home against ‘weaker’ opposition who sit with 2 banks of 4.

a fluid 4-3-3 with 3 genuine strikers and Holgate as the Dm dropping in to the back when the full backs push on would be hilarious ... just what previous managers promised.
If we had a half decent CB instead of Keane playing Holgate as a fluid DM/CB would be seen as a tactical masterstroke.

Hes been in the role for 8 days.

Not sure thats enough time to implement a total change of strategy and playing style with 2 games to play...and another coming up.

The key is to get points now and gradually evolve the playing style whilst still giving it 100%.

If he gets a win in the cup and into the semis id be shocked if he wasnt given more time.

Sadly though we do have Keane

I feel we should focus on a Centre midfielder and a centre back...really need two top signings to come in.

Spot on

Whisper it but this team has a bit of the 'Joe Royles first season' about it...

Lets hope it ends on the same note ;)

I agree mate. To me, that’s what an Everton side should be. The most successful sides we’ve had since Kendall’s team of the mid-80’s have all had that fight, passion, style of play and hard-working/never say die attitude drilled into them. It’s what Goodison reacts to.

I’m baffled that there’s ‘fans’ having a go at Dunc for drilling those same qualities into this team. For me, it should be the bare minimum expected of any Everton side.

One strategy? If that's true why isn't every team copying it since he's just beaten a top 4 team at home and drew away at a top 4 contender? Bet Pep is kicking himself for not doing it against Man Utd a week ago...

I'm surprised there are some that aren't ready to go on this journey with Duncan and see how this goes. This is genuinely exciting. Seeing players that were bottom 3 perform at the level they should be performing at. What more can you expect from any manager?

Some of you have absolutely no lives at all. We’re actually picking up points (against big teams too), we’re playing sensible football considering what we have and Ferguson himself he said he doesn’t want the job so why even bother arguing about that you bunch of bad weirdos?

Just enjoy us being seemingly a lot less crap than we were a couple of weeks ago.

Repeatedly saying you don't want it and that you aren't qualified for it is an odd way to go about that.
I feel that fans are being groomed for Ferguson to be assistant to Moyes in January. The club selling it as "he's done a fantastic job and he can now continue his development under someone who 'gets everton'."

Well, that's your claim. I think he can do a bit more than that. As well, he is the interim manager and is not in a position to revolutionize Everton. All he can do is focus on the basics and lift the intensity of the game. Eventually, a new manager will be hired.

Thats it really.

Ive no issue at all with any of the decisions made so far.

The only thing to really say is that through signing better players (and getting injured players back) the team will naturally evolve into a more pleasant playing style.

Im not fussed about that now...i want to see points on the board and a cup run.
