He has done much better than I thought he would.
I was sort of expecting fatigue to take its toll today - and it did - but we didn't lose.
He walked into a storm with a nightmare run of fixtures and injuries and came out unbeaten - so well deserved congratulations.
A world away from Unsworth in the same position who looked completely over-awed.
Duncan certainly steadied the ship. I thought he came across particularly well, expressed himself very well and was a mature and calming influence when we badly needed it.
As a doubter, his stock has risen considerably for me.
I hope Ancelotti encourages him to voice his thoughts and opinions as part of the staff.
Either he couldn't or wouldn't do it under Silva but I think we benefit from a motivating, passionate Ferguson and that needs to continue.
I popped something together when Ferguson was appointed that stated I thought he'd be ok and was an outside contender for the job.
The comparison to Unsworth is an interesting one. Unsworth really tanked and wasn't looked upon again. Ferguson was luckier I would say, both in terms of individual games but also that the squad he has inherited is better than the one Unsworth had. That has given me some confidence really. We are nowhere near the mess we were in 2 years ago. It's a small consolation but we have remained competitive.
That being said he made some better tactical decisions. He didn't just rush a lot of younger players in (and the first game actually went with quite an experienced team). I'd say that was sensible. He has also kept the same system, it's a pretty easy system to learn quite quickly and the players look much happier in it. Again just quite sensible decision making. I would say tactically he has been far in advance of Unsworth too, and has done quite a few cuter things that have helped fox opponents.
The big thing for me though, is he's got a real presence about him. He comes across as very at ease with himself and the world he is in, and seems to relish the spotlight whereas Unsworth seemed to shrink in it. He's also an adept communicator. Yes without doubt bits of it are saying what apple want to hear, but thats an important part of management.
I'm glad Ancelotti is keeping him on. I am not sure Ancelotti is a particularly modern "coach" and more of an old fashioned manager. We need a bit of that with some of our players. The hope will be though, that Ferguson will have a much bigger role on the training pitch. Reading between the lines it seems Ancelotti will look to build upon what Duncan has established.
As a club we've missed that a bit I think. There have been a lot of people wanting to oppose big ideas onto the club that didn't fit the club, the staff or the players. We have no gone on a little unbeaten run against the better sides in the league. If we have a manager who has the confidence to start from a position of not how they want the game to be played, but rather what works for these players thats great.
It's not been a bad weekend really. Norwich look gone and Aston Villa are not far behind for me. Southampton got a decent win but I still think they will be below us, and Bournemouth have lost another important game. If 4-5 teams can start to get cut adrift below us then thats a big first step.
