Duncan Ferguson - The Coach

Given the injuries presently and personnel available, Duncan played to our strengths, 2 strong fast fit players up front, we played more direct. If we had Gomes, Ghana/Gharbin and a in form siggardson/iwobi we would could play through the midfield. With Siggardson and Schniederlein playing against kovacic, Kante and Mount we would have been overrun playing on the Deck. This style isn’t the long term answer but it certainly is the best option currently considering our position and squad options . I’ve said before on this forum that Richarlison is the only player that can lead the line himself and that’s not an ideal scenario. It’s not surprising Dominic Calvert Lewin had one of his best games yesterday playing up front and Richarlison wasn’t far behind. It wasn’t the prettiest game yesterday but it’s a start and a couple of positive result in this difficult period could give the players confidence and I’m sure the football will improve.

Out of curiosity what are you basing your theory that we’d play through the midfield on? We had a good bit of luck yesterday but one obvious factor was the desire to get the ball out wide. None of our recent managers liked playing through the middle and dunc was one of the first team coaches. Hard to break a 5 year habit....

I didn’t say playing through the middle. I said playing from the back into midfield keeping possession. There was definitely a change in tactics yesterday. When was the time we only had 30% possession in a game?

Leicester won the league having 30% possession in a lot of games. It might not be fashionable but there are more than one way to skin a cat. This season realistically is about not going down, playing that that every home game should yield enough points to ensure that. Will be interesting to see how he approaches the Man U game tbh.

Just read the first few pages of slagging Duncan off and saying he would be better as a 'coach driver'.

Typical stick given in here for many associated with the club.

I don't think for a minute he will be our manager but hats off to him in the way he galvanise that team, made them fight for every ball, made them play for the badge.

Whilst he remains in charge, however long, he will do everything to motivate the players to win.

Whilst I prefer to have a flexible approach sometimes you play through the middle at others you are more direct. The truth is we don't have the players right now to play the laboured possession game we've been trying to play since Martinez really we only veered away from it in periods under Koeman and Big Sam. The Everton style is organised, hard-working, high pressing, high octane intensity and a mixture of football and fast direct attacks, essentially it sounds rather like what Liverpool do, doesn't it?! I think it's easier to play more direct against bigger teams at home but against lower half teams who sit in, we need more. So a mixture is what we need, the playing out from the back high line style doesn't work if you don't have the personnel or confidence to carry it out. Simplifying things in the short term and then rebuilding is what we need to do. In the long term we want a team that has a mix of styles and a manager with a character big enough to handle the job, a winner, with a tactical brain, who can change depending upon the circumstances we need to get Goodison firing, and that means we play some rocking football of our own.

Duncan Ferguson’s timing and tactics are spot-on for Everton win

• Ferguson wore Howard Kendall’s old watch in 3-1 victory

Duncan Ferguson wore a trademark blue sweatband on his left wrist. On his right was an old Armani watch, broken and stuck at 8.15. It was not the sign of a managerial novice forgetting to use a stopwatch but another reminder, not that any more were required after a tumultuous defeat of Chelsea, of how much Everton means to the man in temporary charge.

“It’s Howard Kendall’s watch,” said Ferguson, the adrenaline still flowing an hour after Everton’s 3-1 win. “Lily [Kendall’s widow] came down and gave it to me to put on my wrist and wear it. Lily gave it to my wife this morning. She said she wanted me to wear it on the bench for Howard. I loved him. He was a diamond, wasn’t he? It was very emotional. It doesn’t work but there you go, it’s nice. It’s an amazing feeling. To get the result and you could just feel it in the stadium, couldn’t you? Everyone was so happy, everything went well.”

Loving this. ♡

what's not to love

It's been said that Marco's command of English might have hampered him somewhat in communicating with the players. I can see that might be true. So I wonder how the players got on in the Chelsea game understanding Duncan's Scottish burr?

"Jest git oot there and gey intae 'em. CAM ORN!!"

Not intending to downplay his tactical knowledge.....I'm sure he gave them more complex instructions about shape etc which he spoke about post match.

I do wonder how all these different nationalities work together with phrases like
"foot in"
"put yer laces through it"
"in their faces"
"row z"
"man on"
etc

None of which appear in doulingo.
If you're half good you 'parliamo football' if you're really good you 'understand football'
Football is a simple game - so is the language

The comatose sleeping giant that has been Everton for the past 30yrs...in the form of Duncan Ferguson...just opened his eyes

and gave me back my Club.

We've tried all the tica taca copy cat theorists.

We don't need a fireman, spanish or otherwise.

We needed a Fire Starter.

Lo and behold, Christmas came early and we got one.

If he's come and gone like the Christmas decorations by the 12th day of Chrismas so be it.
Then forget your Gold Rings, koff with your drummers drummin, 'k your Lords a leaping.

Never mind your 3 wise men's gifts

He came bearing the 3 best gifts of all.
Howards Broken Watch - A Lucky Sweat band

And the best gift of all -

He reminded us...and those 3 wise men (and women) up in the stand - What our Royal Blue Soul looked like.

We, the 3 wise men and whoever they finally appoint should not forget it - ever

It may have been measured at 30% but when you were watch it didn't 'look' like 30%
Because, if you know what you're actually watching, in your mind you take off most of the meaningless - me to you, you to me balls that comprised their 70%

...If you know what you are watching

Have not heard too many suggesting he should be booted out of the club in the last 36 hours.
This

Leicester may actually end up with a bigger points total that won them the league the other year and finish 8pts second

Maaate ... I have only just dried my eyes from the weekend and now he’s coming out with things like this?

I know it’s a dream and won’t happen but I have never wanted someone else, other than myself to succeed as much I I do him as our manager . Never in my life have I wanted something to happen so much for another person

Yeah and if the board do drag their heels and can’t find a good manager and he gets to continue this hard run if we get beat I hope it doesn’t turn ugly on him he inherited a team in 18th playing all the big six in a row what he did for us the weekend should be enough if we lose at Old trafford just once we show the same fight he should still be applauded but the knife will be well and truly stuck in by lads on here expecting ‘cone layer’ to be Jesus Christ.
