2022/23 Dwight McNeil

I would suggest you don’t have eyes if you can’t see what he offered tonight. No coincidence why Patterson was able to have such a good game with McNeil in front of him, on Leeds’ dominant side no less. He can still improve in front of goal but he still doesn’t have anything to aim at or pass to in terms of a striker.

He’s also still young in his own right, he’ll grow into this team with Maupay and Dom to play off of in future. Think he’ll eventually end up as a 10 but his hard work clearly makes things easier for other players.

Can’t believe the level that people are slating a 22 year old in a new club playing a totally new style of play. 5 goals and 5 assists should be his target this season and I think he’ll be able to achieve it. He’ll be a good player for us just give him the time he needs.

Some fans could keep this in the back of their mind and not just regarding McNeil, not every performance has to be the best thing you’ve ever seen on a football pitch and when it’s not it doesn’t make it the worst thing you’ve ever seen either. The fact that he’s come in and been a bit underwhelming is a non issue.

In fairness literally anyone who had a brain could tell he offers loads like this people just chose to ignore it because he played for Burnley, now they'll be quiet like they've had to be with Tarkowski. I believe there was a video put out before he signed that basically said he was a world class defensive winger based on loads of different metrics. Fair enough you want your forwards scoring and assisting but the defensive effort is massively important in the modern game too, there's a reason that every one of Patterson's best games came with McNeil in front of him.

If he can contribute 10 g/a in a season and help the likes of Patterson get forward too, as well as providing defensive help then he'll be an absolute snip at just £15m, I've said it since he signed that people just need to give him an actual chance. Too many fools judge a player on where they've played before like I've said with him and Tarkowski of course who's now become one of our best players instantly. 22 year old lad with a bright future, just needs a chance, especially with Calvert Lewin playing who he's barely shared the pitch with.

I’ve said it since he was signed, feel free to go back and check, but this lad has something. He’s a hard worker and can create things out of nowhere. People also should’ve gotten off his back, he’s still a very young lad after all.

Yes he’s not a Richarlison replacement, not even close but he’s currently our best forward player, although that’s not saying much. I think expectations were probably unfairly high but in saying that we brought him in for like £2m up front or whatever mad figure it was and sold Gordon for £45m despite the fact that McNeil is comfortably better and they’re both roughly the same age.

Hopefully if we can turn ourselves around and get going he’ll be at the very least a good squad player for us who didn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Last night he managed to match the amount of goal contributions in one season (10 in total) that Gordon has over his whole PL career...

In terms of a Gordon replacement he's been superb and turned a profit for us. You'd also think the way they're spoken about that McNeil is a lot older but he's only 23 compared to Gordon at 22.

Gordon, Gordon ?….nope doesn’t ring a bell……

Thing is he's had two games where he's had acres of space to attack and he's grabbed it and shown what he can do. He was like an Everton version of Gareth Bale( i dont know what that means tbh)
A lot of teams wont give him that much space.
But ive loved him last couple of games. His driving forward with the ball has been so refreshing because he's looked menacing with it.

Sorry lads can only accept your apology for writing him off if you quote your own posts writing him off into your humbling apology.

There’s a consistent lesson here that being the first to write off an Everton player is just a weird fetish and indeed hardly any of you know a baller, so pipe down and just watch the game.

By sundown for the dars please, or the vaults shall hit you harder than you’ve ever been vaulted in your life.
They never, ever learn.

They try to forget, but we’ll always be watching, waiting, periodically opening the vaults to dish out harsh lessons to absolute man children.

It’s a thankless task, but one we're happy to do for the greater good.

Mad how all of his best performances have came from him playing on the left isn’t it @TheBigIguana?

To be fair to the big lizard, if we ever get to a point in which we are gonna be seeing a lot more of the ball, I think McNeil coming in off the right makes more sense, with a good full back overlapping or cutting inside to score (see his Fulham or Kiev goal).

But in the current set up, especially for defensive reasons, he stays on the left.

That's a good point, and he also seems to have that 'spirit' we need anyway. It's always nice if a local lad does the business, but this is a really successful replacement so far.

I think it’s because McNeill has been around the first team in the prem a lot longer, deffo seems like he should be older.

The confusing thing for me is with Maupay/Gray up front we got a lot of crosses in, now Dom’s back McNeills hardly put a cross in. Luckily we are finding other ways, but hopefully we do both.

We put a fair few crosses in last night, but ultimately crosses are going to happen more when you're not counter attacking like we were, and the space that Brighton left for the attackers to attack, rather than go wide and whip one in.
