2024/25 Dwight McNeil

Despite missing the majority of the season, he's still our joint 3rd goalscorer and top assister for the season.

I can see Moyes making use of him.

I honestly believe he'd thrive in a wide position for Moyes with an overlapping full back. Playing in that middle channel suits him very well.

He has done well when he moves from out wide. Under Dyche, it was on the off ball side, if he's on the left he'd flood the middle when the ball was on the right side.

With Moyes, he'd push inside when he's on the ball side (playing on the left side, ball on left side).

I think he'll be a very productive player for the next couple of years. We should be aiming for top 6 but we have so many holes to fill this summer, I can't see us pushing him out of a big role for next season.

What I don’t understand with Dwight is why everyone always makes a thing about his supposed lack of pace, but never says the same about Ndiaye. Ndiaye isn’t fast at all - that’s why he often ends up beating the same man twice! - but makes up for it by being able to hold onto the ball. Dwight is the same when played on the left. I think either works as long as we finally manage to acquire the pacey right winger we’ve needed for years.

I'd say that's partly down to Ndiaye having much more explosive acceleration and so appearing much faster off the mark, and partly down to the role they play being different - Ndiaye is often running into open space and in situations where he can effectively run sideways to get away from people, whereas McNeil is often getting the ball in situations where he needs to go past someone on the outside and the lack of pace becomes much more obvious.

Hold on: You've seen McNeil take on a player before? Nobody else has!

They're both male who play for Everton Football Club and that's where any similarity ends.

If both are available games in game out, vying for the same position, then Dwight McNeil never plays for Everton again (or unless Ndiaye gets sold)

That's how valid I think it is mate.
If both are available and vying for the same position, I’m certain Dwight will play for Everton again, so will be very interesting to see what happens.

Agreed.

This was the issue when he played under Dyche... he was our wide left midfielder, but with no overlapping full back or much in the way of movement up front (mostly because we had a single isolated centre forward) it was difficult for him to get himself into half a yard of space in dangerous areas.

Mykolenko getting forward (assuming McNeil is used on the left) and the likes of Ndiaye, Alcaraz etc buzzing around in behind the forward will afford him more space to be more effective more regularly.

I really like McNeil and think he has a role in the squad, but he’s not really comparable to Ndiaye.

I’ve never watched Ndiaye and thought he looked shocking, i have with Mcneil, like when he come on last week.

Oh I agree and Ndiaye is one of my favourite players to watch at the moment, but I think it’s very easy to overlook the value to a team of someone like McNeil, who’s one of the very few players in our squad who actually creates goals and chances for others.
