2024/25 Dwight McNeil

Still some seem to be underrating him and for some reason concentrate on what he doesn’t do well which is bizarre. Such an intelligent footballer, skilful and clearly has an excellent football brain. Can thread a ball through the eye of a needle. The 10 role suits him down to the ground. Another assist, should have had 2 assists if we had a striker that could finish clear chances. That killer through ball for DCL is what he’s all about.

And to think the majority groaned when we picked him up from Burnley for a paltry 15 million when every man and his dog wanted Cornet instead..

Ipswich are poor, slower than us... Not a measure that gives McNeil gold stars for me. Has given the ball away against better opposition, even the game he scored 2 in was very poor as no 10 in keeping the ball. Still you can only play against what is in front of you. Unless he can use his right leg he is only ever going to look good in a handful of games a season.

Already matched his goals tally from last season and half way to matching his assist tally.

I get the frustration with his lack of pace and his refusal to use his right foot, but if he continues the way that he has started and gets 10+ goals and/or assists that would be a great season. Not sure who our last player to hit those kind of numbers was?

James or Sigurdsson.

I like McNeil, just hope Dyche doesn't always play him as the 10 though, we saw against Newcastle that if we play a team with a half-decent midfield, we'll quickly lose a grip of that area of the park.

Just checked - you're correct... in the 20/21 season James got 6 league goals and 4 assists and Sigurdsson got 6 league goals and 5 assists.

Funnily enough, after losing out on that goal threat we've been at the wrong end of the table ever since. McNeil hitting those kind of numbers will help move us up the joy of mid-table obscurity.

If he can hit double figures in goals and assists that will be better than most other attacking midfielders in the league except the elite ones.

I've always liked him as a player. I'm a sucker for a bit of hard work, and it's always been obvious he's got a cracking left foot. It's also always good to have a set piece specialist in the team. So, for those reasons, I've always liked him.

However, I've had my misgivings. I felt he was too slow for the wing, though I do feel he could effectively operate as a wide midfielder, with a flying winger on the right, and an attacking full back behind him.

I also felt he was too one footed for the central role, but really happy to see him proving me wrong.
