At the same time that FSG are making major cutbacks at the Red Sox, tried to use the furlough scheme, and have all but cancelled their stadium expansion, there’s still Liverpool fans and journalists convinced they’re going to buy one of Mbappe, Messi, Griezmann, or Sancho. It’s laughable. They could even scrape the 15 mill needed for Jamal Lewis from Norwich and had to go for a cheaper option. Werner was all but done yet they couldn’t find a fee less than what Wolves have just spent on a teenager.
They didn’t learn their lesson from 09/10. They overstretched as usual chasing trophies buying players for world record fees, spending more in a calendar year than any team in the history of football, and budgeted it all on the most optimistic sunny day scenario. Then an absolute hailstorm hit. Yet their fans are questioning why they’re not getting Mbappe. As long as no one gives them a silly fee for any of their big assets (VVD, and the front three) they’re in an absolute bind as they’re all either sat on massive contracts (or will be demanding to be on one soon) just at the point their resale value is going to decline to nothing.
A lot of the banter they give, I can completely get on board with. There is a tendency for us to be a bit obsessed with them (one which they replicate, and it's oder when they do it). I'm not sure I'd be wearing Spurs or Barcelona shirts, but again it's exactly what they did as far back as 99, getting Bayern Munich. The difference is, we are the nominated local rivals, whereas they just invented a rivalry based on their inferiority and jealousy with United.
The idea though that we are in dire financial trouble, while we have 1-3 billionaire owners who have continaully pumped masses of finance in, and openly state "money will never be a problem here" is very odd. I don't know how far to say things, without potentially pujuring myself, but also put it in simple enough language that they can understand but I'll try- Russian billionaires will often have companies they invest in, without any real need to run at a profitas there are other motivations. If they wanted to run Everton at a profit they would do it, they are quite happy to keep investing, which as shareholders is absolutely their right.
They sturggle with the concept of shareholder investment as well, it's a fairly basic idea that is central to the society we live in, but they can't get their heads around it.
As for their club, they often go on as if I'm some sort of oracle for seeing their problems. Again it's just very obvious. The USA is in dire political and financial strife. They have an investment portfolio mainly based on discernible spend (which will be hammered). They will come under enormous pressure. They will not be able to sustain the investments levels they had previously. It's all very obvious.
In situations like this, shareholders who are prepared and able to continue to gamble and invest in the business will probably flourish, those that are unable to tend to struggle in reessions. They attach all sorts of unneccesary moral meaning to this, but it's just a fact of life.
They thought they were signing Mbappe, Werner & Havertz. I pointed out very early on, they would not be. It was insane to think they would be. They were wrong, I was right, again.
