ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

Henderson is a very good midfielder. He has the ability and intelligence to play multiple midfield roles and as we saw last season he is a competent CB. Added to that he is Liverpool’s inspirational leader on the pitch. I genuinely can’t name a better captain in the premier league right now. When assessing a player’s abilities one is best advised to consider the player’s net contribution to the team and Henderson scores highly on that front.
HOLY MOLEY!!!

Stealing a living.

Henderson is a tidy play and nothing more, doesn't do do anything eye catching, and does the simple things, a lot of top teams always have a midfielder like that in a team, a grafter in other words, they help function a balanced midfield, the DM, the grafter (box to box), the creative player, it seems to be the archetype midfield balance.

You've forgotten the 'double-pivot' there mate.

Going all continental, yeah i guess so in a 4231 formation, with the double pivot you have the DM and the grafter (box to box) type, they never stand out but the keep it simple, tend to be the more energetic, up and down the pitch and simple passes.

Gueye at PSG does the same job and Herrera, all that easy on the eye talent around them, they will hardly be noticed, but they'll be a important cog in the team., work hard and get the ball and give it simple.

Like i said all the top teams have that type of player, Fernandinho at City for years and now they have Rodri doing that role, Kovacic at Chelsea, United play a double pivot 4231 Mctominay and Fred combine that role at United, Carrick did the job in that great 00's United side, nothing eye catching but did the simple things which gave the likes of Scholes to do his thing.

The reason for that is the fast CB's behind who can cover when him and Robertson are marauding forward , he has 3 assists already in 4 games, they are back to squeezing the pitch high up with the CB's which makes the fullbacks the main creative outlet.

Matip, Gomez and VVD are rapid highline CB's who defend at the halfway line, when they were not in the team in any combination last season then the fullbacks had to hold the line because of the slow CBs for 30 odd games of the season, it's why their assists numbers were down so much and why they struggled to break down teams who sat back.

I did read on Statsbomb yesterday that Matip and VVD have started 34 PL games together, are unbeaten and conceded 14 goals.

Wasn’t a tactical reason, last season he was utterly terrible in the middle of the season. One on one defending he was being done all over the place, he could barely find a pass into midfield at times and his positional play at set pieces was all over the show. It was an absolutely gigantic fall in form from a plyer that the media had proclaimed as the best right back in the world, to one that deservedly wasn’t even going to make the England squad until the RS propaganda machine in the media put the squeeze on Southgate.

Same happened with Mane and Firmino, amazing the season before, but then couldn’t hit a barn door or beat a man last season, now they’re flying again at the start of this one.

How unusual for a team to all peak and dip in form at exactly the same time by such wild swings. Must be because Van Dijk was injured.

Wasn't the whole team utterly terrible in that time frame, they were top at Xmas and then lost something like 8 games at home in a row and didn't win for something like 12 games, and not scoring.

The were leaking goals, they had midfielders in defence and the forwards suffered from the team being so deep and they struggled for goals.

Like i said, they have their rapid CB's back, the CB's push right up to the halfway line, it allows them to flood the final 3rd of the pitch where they end up having 5 attackers with the FB's and front 3.

The FB's are the playmakers of a Klopp team, the creative outlet, if they are to deep then Klopp's system is broke, and that was shown in the middle part of the season, the whole team were utterly terrible because of a broken system that collapsed because they could not have CB's who were comfortable or quick enough using a starting point of the halfway line, which gave license for the FB's to push constantly high up the pitch.

The reason they had that unbeaten push for the top 4 spot, is Klopp just decided to push his slow CB's at the halfway point and go back to the system they know and push the FB's up and play the normal game , it was a risky strategy that paid off in the end finishing top 4, it also got them knocked out of the CL, they played that suicidal high line with the slow CB's against Madrid with the FB's high and Kroos, Modric pinged constant balls to the vacated RB area with the isolated slow Phillips exposed and Vinicius punished them constanly, amazingly no English teams followed that tactic in those last 10 games.
