ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

The defence is the unit to watch: Van Dijk peaked at Southampton and the first season he had at Liverpool. Since then it's been down hill...and he'll continue to deteriorate. Trent Whatever is quite easily one of the worst defenders in any elite team. He'll cost them time and time again. Joe Gomez is their Holgate. Konate is crocked for months in all likelihood. Matip is bang average. Robertson - even if he is a rat faced little fried banana eating snide - is, for me, comfortably the best player they have in the back four. Much more balanced in attack-defence than the idiot on the other flank.

They need to bin that defence and start again.

They gave teams gilt edged chances each week last season. Even we got in behind them multiple times in both derbies and couldn’t finish and we were awful. Teams let them off the hook big time with some truly terrible finishing. You can’t keep getting away with that though. Fulham had two or three situations where even an average forward pass would have had them in on goal. That Liverpool high line is suicidal against any team that is actually interested in giving them a game and can play around the first press.

You don’t see City giving teams these opportunities, they sometimes give away the odd half chance (which nearly always flies in against them) but over the course of a season the difference should tell.

ironically, our lack of a decent CF but having two or three fast mobile players wide and in the #9position may prove fruitful against their back line.

Teams just don’t seem to be clinical against them and I don’t know why. The league cup final is a prime example from last season, how many games would you see Chelsea pass up those types of opportunities? It’s often similar when City play them, missed penalties, messed up one on ones, Spurs in both games exactly the same. There’s obviously some sort of mental aspect to it because Madrid seem to have absolutely no problem putting them away.

Even we’ve let them off the hook so many times when you think of the chances missed recently by Gomes Mina Coleman DCL Davies against them and we’ve not been good at all in that period.

That defence gives even average teams multiple chances. One day someone won’t crap the bed and will just punt them for four or five.

Like Villa did two seasons ago.

I can't believe how many easy chances get missed by opposition players. When they played Spurs away around Christmas last season, you had Harry Kane turn into Ade Akinbiyi. I can only conclude that it is a mentality thing.

A couple of things became obvious to me towards the end of last season and were highlighted by City, Spurs and Real Madrid - diagonal balls in behind the full-backs (particularly Alexander-Arnold) to quick wingers like Vinicius, Son and Jesus bears fruit. As Ancelotti said, you need to sit deep and play it in behind them in wide areas with quick attacking intent. Having forwards like Benzema and Kane to hold it up and do this also helps.

I just think even a two-month injury to one of Salah or Van Dijk completely derails them.

They’re extremely good/fortuitous at avoiding defeat. Never seen anything like it, in most of the games last season against the rest of the top 4 they were completely outclassed yet got away with drawing most of them. It’s the draws that eventually cost them in the league but it would be nice to see a team just take a few chances and put them away properly. They just ride this wave of not losing and teams start to think of them as unbeatable and it feeds this feeling they’ll always find a way out. Need a few teams to just show them up as decent outfit but not one that has any right getting over 90 points in a season of being anywhere near the latter stages of the CL.

The season before last when they had that poor middle third of the season: every team was queuing up to play Liverpool because they'd lost their lustre of invincibility. With the growing injury list they have, the loss of Mane and the more predictable Nunez spearheading the attack, Liverpool will need to get some wins under their belt or that sense of fear the opposition have will evaporate and those chances you mention WILL be snapped up.

Liverpool's attack is still formidable with good players like Diaz and Jota alongside the admittedly great Salah, but I look at Liverpool and the midfield and defence are way, way, way off what City can put out...it could be that Chelsea, Arsenal or Spurs are City's closest challengers this season.

Gerrard continues to 'prove his worth' in his audition.

"Aston Villa Manager Steven Gerrard shown red card at the Vitality Stadium for getting in the face of ball boy after ball was not released quickly enough. Gerrard pushed the 9 year old and walks off disgruntled"

At least he got in that ball boys face; Klopp seen his arse when one of our ball boys had him off and he skulked away down the tunnel.

I have seen this pop up in three different WhatsApp groups and it is all over the Internet, and the first time I saw it my immediate thought was @chicoazul may have gold here, but it has far outdone even my wildest expectations
