Yea undoubtedly a better position, but are they smashing up the top 4 on a regular basis? No they had a couple of seasons finishing fifth behind probably the worst run Sky six team in United. United were able to just drop 60 mill on Fernandes to get them out of trouble one season.
Leicester did everything right and still couldn’t get in amongst those big boys on a consistent basis. Perhaps Newcastle will break the trend, or perhaps they’ll fade away in the second half of the season, who knows, but if it was as simple as just having a decent manager and spending money wisely then a lot of mid table teams would have broken into the CL. They don’t though, because the top teams will take the best managers and the best players and pay them exorbitant wages, and if they do mess up they have no restraints to just throw 100s of millions at the problem until it disappears. Teams in mid table might get one chunk of money and then spend five years kicking their wounds if they don’t make top 4 with it.
What you'll see in the coming seasons is a drop in interest imo.
Its only really been us and Leicester who have spent big money in recent seasons and Leicester have had some success in that period so for many clubs they still have delusions of being able to compete long term.
Give it 2-3 seasons and West Ham, Villa and Brighton will realise what we know. Palaces chairman has alluded to the unfairness - throw in a cost of living crisis and increases in season ticket pricing and Sky/BT subscriptions I think you'll see many fans turning away.
The only way to compete now is essentially for a Gulf State to buy you, dope you up with sponsers from their national owned companies and avoid the rules the league/UEFA have put in place.
What a farce.
