you're correct that it has been known that they are bad bankers for some time but more bad publicity is not to be sniffed at.

They have a long history, via other forms (Standard Bank of South Africa etc,) of financing the South African state during its years of apartheid. They also financially backed Cecil Rhodes and his imperialist adventures in neighbouring Rhodesia and in his attempt to control De Beers the blood diamond kings of the world.
Latterly they've bankrolled mining groups in South America that have torn through indigenous population land, and now they have this terrorist link.
