I think they really need to learn to hold their hands up and acknowledge wrongdoing.
Councils support businesses in all sorts ventures. They will have spend funds on helping to develop Anfield, and exploring the possibility of a new ground for Everton. Everton's new ground will create substantially more jobs than the redevelopment at Anfield, and won't see people booted out of their houses but in essence the dynamics are very similar.
The council would have had millions of pounds more, had it not been for a campaign of misinformation propagated by Liverpool supporters led to the club moving away from the deal. Every child that goes without food, could have been fed by the millions of pounds of annual interest payments we would have made. They chose to campaign against that. They should apologise to every hungry child, every old person who doesn't get the care they need and every library that has to shut because of their decision making.
The "club staff" are employed by a 3rd party and a partner of Everton. It would be like if for example Nivea, or Standard Chartered or whoever furloughed staff. The fact is, no member of staff has been furloughed by Everton football club.
They are trying to deflect from a serious question, nominally, why were they trying to steal money, designated for the NHS in it's hour of need. Why were they expecting tax payers like me, like teachers educating children, nurses and doctors tendering to our dying to do overtime, at great risk and have their taxes being given to a football club who pays it's playing staff (in all likelihood) over £300m a season in wages?
Rather than posting fake news, the word they are looking for is "sorry" and it is an apology owed to every public sector worker who's money they wanted to steal to cover for their own greed. Sometimes, you have to show some integrity and do the right thing.
